Hi Everyone - OK so this may seem like a no brainer for most of you, but i have heard mix signals about how good J&M are with regards to just a general mid tear shoe. I am curious, first off, to know what would you guys do in my position? Secondly, is J&M a good mid tear brand when you look at styles like the Melton, Newell, or Nolen?

Both shoes are a black cap toe shoe with leather sole. The AE are goodyear welted and the J&M say they are optima with goodyear welt construction.

So what is the verdict from your guys?

FYI, I am buying both and trying them on before I return one of them, and from a price perspective one of them wins overall (no spoilers) but I know the AE are from the shoe bank and are not park avenues (still not sure why those are the top tier shoes for AE in the cap toe department).

Any suggestions let me know. I think I am also trying to broaden my horizon with other brands to see which mid tier brands exists and how long they last and just don't want to played for a fool when buying another pair of shoes. I bought some Banana Republic shoes and the insole got a hole after only 1 year of use and they haven't held up well. I am going to do some basic maintenance maybe even resole them to keep them alive a bit longer for some circulation of all my shoes to not degrade the AE wingtips I have and every other shoe I have. The small ones are J&M and the large one is AE. I guess I should have done all pictuures equal size but they all look the same.

someone correct me if im wrong, but i believe the difference is in the leather quality. AE is full grain, will last longer, look better over time and takes polish better. there is a slight break in period though.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
