What do you think about these as a first pair of shoes? I'd like to be able to wear them with my dark gray suit and jeans too

That is one of my favorite AE styles. I would definitely wear it with a suit. Too dressy for jeans IMO, though I suspect I may be in the minority with that opinion.

One of my favorites as well. I wear them with suits and trousers all the time. I'm not so sure about jeans. I prefer wings with jeans. The chili color is fabulous!

Not to hijack, but I was thinking about it in Merlot as I don't have any shoes that color. Great looking shoe.

I have the Birmingham in the same color. I think the color is quite versatile.

I have AE Byrons in Chili. Love the color (after I polished with darker brown to tone down the orange), but I don't find it that versatile for suits. The color is a bit flashy for many of my suits. IMHO, a darker brown would provide much more versatility. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't buy them, but that you should have dark brown shoes first.

On the other hand, for jeans; the color is perfect.
