I’m 5’7” and can’t decide whether to purchase a 36S or 36R jacket.

You want the jacket to cover your butt; it appears the 36R does it better. You'll need to have a tailor shorten the arms for you though. Rarely will off the rack fit correctly without alterations.

They 36R is a more timeless silhouette on you. It meets the three oft-cited guidelines:
  1. It covers your butt,
  2. it reaches to mid-thumb,
  3. and it’s half the distance from back of your neck to the floor.
Plus, it makes you look like an adult man who takes care of his business.

I have the same sizing issue. 5’7” and I went back and forth at the whim of salespeople until I ordered both 38S and 38R in Suitsupply’s Try at Home program. Then I did what you’re doing, posting both on this forum.

I chose 38R and had the sleeves shortened. I sent the 38S back and have no regrets.

Hard to tell, the most important images are missing (buttoned front, back).
This being said, it appears the navy one is the better choice as the black one is too small (shoulders, length). If you sense a future in which you wear suits, learn to tell a good suit early on. This will save you money and/or give the best value in the long run. The dichotomy btw. a fused and canvassed jacket is a good start.

I also vote on the 36R for the reasons posted above. Good luck
