Advice on Herringbone Overcoat

Having just moved to Chicago, I'll be in desperate need of an overcoat soon. Found this one on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NWT-VERSACE-DARK...item92af4d7cbe

Can anyone give me their thoughts on whether this is
1) Real
2) Warm
3) Well constructed
4) Stylish or tacky

Finally, the last issue is that I typically wear a 44L suit. Is it possible to get the 46R (I'm assuming it's a regular lengths), and get it appropriately tailored for sleeve length and waist without it looking goofy?

I've been hanging around the forum for a few months, but I finally made the plunge into posting! Any input is appreciated.

Versace actually runs slim and long in at least some garments, so you'd want to compare the measurements of that 46R jacket to a well-fitting 44L sportcoat of yours. (Obviously you will need to make sure that the 46R provides enough extra room to fit the other jacket underneath.) Looking at those measurements, unless you have freakishly long arms there should be enough room to bring the sleeves in, so you would just want to make sure you are happy with the chest, waist, and length.

Stylistically, it looks pretty "classic" to me. Gray herringbone for a winter coat is unimpeachable. Definitely not tacky. I'm assuming that you are planning to wear over a suit jacket/sport coat (otherwise be sure to size down). If you're not wearing with a suit jacket or sport coat, it is certainly longer than what I would prefer to wear (42" length in sz 40 means it would fall at about knee height, I'd prefer something in more of a 3/4 length personally).

The thing about OCs is that length is such a stylistic matter, rather than really a fit matter, that even if it looks short people will assume that's the style. Personally I hate short OCs but that's what the kids are wearnig these days so this should work for you.

46 down to 44 will be tougher.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
