So this was emailed to me twice and two other ppl SMSed a 'wtf, did you see that' to me yesterday.

Behold, Vietnam News piece on the black market in endangered species here:

spanknr0.jpg

Two possibilities as I see it.

1. Vietnamese subeditor wrote caption based on phrase he heard somewhere

2. Grinning native-English-speaker figured 'the Vietnamese editors wont know what this means, and all the expats will get a chuckle out of it'

a couple of countries away, but here is an extract from an email from my opposite number in our Bangkok office:

apparently one of the staff there walked into the office at 5 and said "can we leave now, there is going to be a coup at 8 tonight, tanks will come" she was way off. They didnt roll in until until 10. Thai efficiency....still, if it was Vietnam they'd be parked somewhere with people sleeping in hammocks slung underneath the tanks while others stole vehicle parts and paid kickbacks to the hammock sleeper. Tis the way.

How many US dollars is 200,000 VND? How many bespoke suits would that buy, or Coca-Colas?

Last time I checked, the exchange rate is $1 = 16,000 VND (yes, you read it correctly) or thereabout. And according to m@t, 200,000 VND can buy you 1/6 of a bespoke suit. Okay, not bespoke, but decently custom, full canvassed and all. That, and an opportunity to haggle w/ old tailors in a language you don't know.

200000vnd = $12 and some change. In Hoi An I paid $35 for a suit once (fused n crappy, but it was an experimental piece), so I guess 12 gets you pants

Coke costs about 5-6000 dong. Since my 6000 times-tables suck, we will work on 5000. 40 Cokes.
