Today we’re going to shake things up a bit, and I’m going to feature three threads that offer very different perspectives of what StyleForum can be, and what it does best.
A Community in a Box
Over the past few years (post-Huddler if it pleases you) StyleForum has experienced massive, unprecedented growth. While that’s great, sometimes the best parts of the forum are those that feature small, insular communities that occupy a single thread. The best example of this part of the forum – which, all things being equal, is an incredible achievement in today’s tumblr-centric, image-a-minute, listicle world – is our wonderful mod and suedehead thread. What started as a place to talk about 1960s British mod style has become a sanctuary for people who actually participated in the mod movement to reminiscence about their days. The images are fantastic, and the fashion tips are expertly woven into a narrative that traces the emergence of a cultural movement.
A Way to Save Money
For many of us, at the end of the day, StyleForum is a way to save money on excellent clothes. I know that one of the key drivers of traffic to the site – and some of our most popular threads – are people looking for coupon codes and sale information. In that vein, this thread, our Streetwear and Denim sales alert thread, is perhaps one of the most valuable forum commodities on the internet. It’s a catalogue of most ongoing sales in men’s clothing (well, relevant sales, anyway), including hard to know, out of the way boutiques and foreign stores. If you’re here looking for a deal, this is the place you should start.
A Brand Profile
To complete our tour of StyleForum, here’s an example of another type of excellent thread: a thread devoted to a specific brand, staffed by posters who are experts. This particular version is about the American shoe brand Allen Edmonds, and it’s equal parts a history of the brand, a place to shoe off the shoes you own, and an opportunity for posters to ask questions and learn about sizing. Plus, it always helps when you have an inside track on upcoming sales. You know you’re definitely on to a good thing, though, when people who actually work for the brand post here too.
