So my wife and I decided to just leave the house today, one week after I had four of my wisdom teeth extracted, to have a nice breakfast in a city near us. I have been craving pancakes and such for a week, thinking it would take much longer than that for me to be able to enjoy such foods again. Breakfast was great, and we decided to stay in the area and check out some stores, shops, etc. One store we happened to find was a thrift store. Having never found anything worth anything in a thrift store, we were both reluctant to go in. After a few minutes of pontification, we decided we'd check it out. Boy am I glad I did. After about 10 minutes of perusal I saw a sport coat that, from a few feet away looked a lot nicer than that others around it. I came over to feel it and to take a look at the tag, and lo and behold it was a Brunello Cucinelli. Price? $9.99.

The front pockets are still sewn shut and the extra buttons were in a small Cucinelli bag in the inside pocket. It is labeled as 100% Virgin Wool. It is about a size small, but I think my tailor can make it work as it's perfect in the shoulders and arms, but it's a tad tight in the chest/belly area. Hopefully it can be let out a bit. So, now the question: I am wondering if this is a "quilted" sport coat, and if so, is it less formal or more formal than a sport coat of the same color/material that isn't "quilted"? Here are some quick snaps of the coat:

I can't imagine what would happen if I found a Cucinelli sport coat for 10 effing dollars. Just by the looks of it, it looks more casual than a "business" type sport coat, but sport coats by definition are more casual. Oh, by the way, can I call dibs if your tailor can't make it work??!?!?? Not a bad way to make 10x ROI, if you know what I mean

Congrats Moo! That coat is a great find. From the photos, the coat doesn't seem informal, except for the cream colored lining of the pockets.

Thank you. I should mention that we are likely not on the same level as some people on this board, monetarily. We both graduated from college only a few years ago, got married, and are trying to purchase a house in probably one of the most expensive areas in the U.S., if not the world. And I am working on going to business school, as well. So, to say the least, funds are tight. I would never be able to purchase something like this new, or maybe not even used, so this is quite special for me. I am not in the position to purchase most anything at retail (even if I wanted), so If I cannot make it work, I will just lose a bit of weight.

Thanks! Cream pockets = less formal, peak lapel = more formal?

I TOTALLY understand you....I can't afford anything I wear at retail...hence scouring B&S and eBay. If I found a jacket like yours, I'd let someone take it from me over my dead body. Enjoy it.

That's a great find.

I'd have to see it in person to get a really solid feeling on the quilt stitching, but I think if it was me I'd probably get a seam ripper and take out the stitching that causes the quilt pattern on the outside. I'm sure it's still stitched around the perimter so that the lining wouldn't just fall out but so that you could still remove the external appearance of having a quilted jacket. that would make it more useable, for me anyhow.

Either way, awesome find. Be sure to put it in the thrift store bragging thread too.

Thanks. I have no idea, at all. I mean, does someone really buy something like this and then just donate it after not wearing it (this doesn't look worn)? What kind of person would this be?

Thank you. I will take it to my tailor and see what he has to say about it. Does a jacket usually have some room for enlarging in the chest/waist area?

You know, not really. I mean, no items that really struck me as a must buy. I didn't look at pants or dress shirts, though. The shoes were all pretty bad.

I've always assumed this stuff hits thrift stores because the owner croaks and the family doesn't know any better.

It truly varies by maker. Most have some room to let, but some have more than others. I have a really nice Ralph Lauren signature suit hanging in my closet waiting for me to drop the last few lb's, but I've heard that those were made with VERY little room to let, so it's all going to have to be me skinnying up or the suit going back into the B&S forum.

In the thrift bragging thread you said it was a size 44R.

Would that be US or European?

Really cool coat BTW!
