A random check from the IRS - anyone else get one?

So Mrs. T hands over this check last night - it's got a green/orange fade background. It's from the Department of the Treasury, and made out to both of us.

She asks, WTF?
I am clueless. This is not new.

No letters have preceded this check. We have not yet filed our 2008 return. Our 2007 return was completed and our refund is completely accounted for. Our company is accounted for in our personal returns (call me a sap, fine!). I called the IRS and found they have a heavy call volume, won't speak to me today. Try again tomorrow *click*

Again, WTF?

I already have plans for this check (return it unless they can tell me why it's mine), but I post simply to ask - was this just me, or are others also getting random checks?

Could it be your stimulus check, which was based on 2007 returns? Unless you already got one of those. Although they sent letters out before the checks for that.

Anyway, deposit it while it's still worth something.

HA! While I spent my part on hookers and beer, she would be buying ammo for when I got home. Actually, she spent a similar amount on her last shotgun, now that I recall.

irs.gov has no scam alerts on the front page that I could see. The first dozen or so scams I found through google were phone and e-mail phishing scams. found nothing about bogus checks (a rather insidious scam in its own right), although I will request the transcripts of my last five years' returns to see what they show as a reason.

Nope - considered that, we're only partially eligible for the stimulus payments, which we've accounted for.

A friend got a check for 30 some odd dollars and change because he'd overpaid taxes 4-5 years prior.

i never got why people won't be specific about their money on the internet, especially in situations where it doesn't matter like these.
