You are correct. The 'hands as registered weapons' rap is in fact a myth.

The only thing that ive heard is a professional boxer was charged with 'aggravated assault' instead of just 'assault' after beating a kid into hospitalization with his fists. 'aggravated assault' is usually given to people who maybe kick someone with steel-toed boots, or use brass knuckles (not deadly weapons perse, but not regular assault either)...and the victim probably had a kick-ass lawyer to get that conviction.
