I think there is a distinct difference between it not being great and it not being an exact play by play from the book. I'm fine with changes from the book as long as the final product is good on its own (which remains to be seen, but I am excited).

Yeah but some of the changes are significant differences.

I would also say some of the casting is marginal. Some is pretty good though. To be fair, Martin wrote some fairly hard to cast characters. For instance, King Robert is just fat vs. being a huge man that can carry some extra big war hammer. Also, there's the whole thing about underage sex to deal with, as I think Dani got married at 13 or so?

Yeah in the books, especially the first, she's described as a little girl, but Emilia Clarke is all woman.

Not sure how old Ned is supposed to be, but IIRC the events in AGOT start around 17 years after the Targaryens were removed from power.

I believe it's around 13 because I believe Dany is born near the end of the war.

I was in 30th Street Station in Philly yesterday and there was a big Iron Throne set up. Pretty cool promotion. Coworkers were a little weirded out at my excitement, not going to lie...

I seem to remember him being sixteen or seventeen at that time. Quite young at least. So indeed around 35 when the series start.
