    There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    You all spent a couple hours, but as my brother I have gone decades :)

    He is out-of-town right now, and will probably be on here sometime soon, but the store is moving and expanding. Still in LA and maybe a 10 minute drive east from the Pacific Ocean. Still on the Westside, west of the 405 San Diego Freeway and super easy access and more parking.

    The selection, and quantity, is beyond anything you will soon forget if you 1) like nice clothes and 2) visit the new place (currently being built out but the current location is still operating and full of merchandise).

    Naturally, I have been and out of the original space since it opened. I was reading some of these posts back to 2003 or so. If you have not been there since 2003-2004, and you were amazed then ... just go and be staggered now. Thousands of items - shirts, shoes, suits, slacks, ties - far more than you see on the internet.

    Prices are still excellent and only a fraction of full retail, quantities, selection and sizes are broad and there is just no way you will not find something.

    I'm still looking for a custom shirtmaker in LA, but in the meantime, I decided to buy a Barba shirt, as I heard they run slim. I was familiar with Ian because I had seen his auctions over the years on ebay, and he's a highly recommended seller here and AA. If you notice his auctions, they all invite potential buyers to visit his store to see his items, so I thought I'd give him a call to set up an appt.

    I arrive promptly, and after I introduce myself, he leads me over to his warehouse, which is two blocks away. The warehouse consists of two rooms, which I'll call the studio side and the storage side. As soon as the lights came on, my jaw just about hit the floor. The studio side houses his computer, measuring table, photography equipment, and mannequins, as well as about a dozen stacks of Borrelli shirt boxes that literally reach the ceiling. As anyone who's seen a Borrelli box can attest, they are really nice boxes...to see so many of them at once was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The storage side is essentially a naked room that consists of racks upon racks of high end clothes. It was like being a kid in a candy store. Slacks on one side, suits on the other, with sportcoats and shelves full of knitwear and ties in between. Attolini and Borrelli everywhere. Theworldsfinest is an apt name.

    I tell him I'm pretty much only in the market for a shirt, and he immediately starts unfolding neatly packed shirts for me to try on. I tried on a bunch of Barbas as well as Borrellis...all the while talking about clothes. His only reaction to my nitpicking the sleeve lengths is to immediately seek more shirts for me to try. He even lets me try on things I have no intention of buying, eg an "╦ťAmerican' Borrelli v. an "╦ťItalian' Borrelli; or things he knows I can't afford, eg an Attolini suit. It was the most fun I've ever had in a clothing store.

    He also showed me some shoes that he's importing from Italy, that are supposedly comparable to Lobb. I can't remember the name, but he mentioned he might post here about them to get some more information about the maker. He did show me the shoe trees that they came with...they are very unique. They look to be made of cedar, but the forepart is completely hollowed out - they look like a work of modern art. It supposedly takes a day to make a pair of trees alone. He's also working on a deal to get some Finamore and Fray shirts in the near future.

    Ian's a really cool, laidback guy, never once pressuring me to buy anything or rushing me...and when it comes to clothes, I'm slow. We spent about two hours together, even though I was only expecting to stay for 20 minutes. The only thing he asked of me was to tell my friends, which is the only reason I decided to write this. I was very tempted to keep this a secret, but he deserves the recognition. To anyone in the LA area, or even if you're just visiting, I highly recommend that you take him up on his invitation to visit his store.


    That's Ian. i haven't been to LA or Ian's in two years. At the time he was carrying St. Crispins shoes
    too. My only complaint is, that unless he's changed his policy, he only gives store credit not a
    refund. I have such a credit from an online purchase which "ran small". Otherwise, it's a great
    place to shop.

    Certainly you could have found something to use the credit on or a shirt that was the right size?

    I had a similar positive experience visiting Ian in October. I only wish I had more time to get into the tailored clothing racks but we had to catch a plane. I would urge anyone who is visiting the Santa Monica area to stop in and see him. You will have fun. "I guarantee it". [​IMG]

    I only wish he would change his return policy on mail/on-line orders. Returns are store credit only. [​IMG] Many of the items have a distinctly different cut than what is typically available in US retailers. His measurements are very accurate but I find I have to try certain things on to know if they will be right. And, some fabrics, you need to see and feel to know if they are right for you. I would probably buy 2-3x as much from him if he offered full returns.

    Probably true. However most of the shirts I like are "slim cut"
    I am not slim anymore. So, I prefer to try on clothing .
    Years ago I would buy T&A and have them
    tapered. Now they fit without tapering

    As long as something is returned within two weeks or so in perfect condition, there is no reason to not receive a full refund.

    Oddly or interestingly, Ian's main competition: Virtual Clotheshorse, STP and eHaberdasher,
    all of whom I have used with satisfaction, offer full refund.

    I don't know if I'd compare VCH or Ehaber to STF. Visiting the store you'll see the scale of his operation. STP is a different animal all together.

    I asked him once about the return policy and his point was that the STP/Yoox's of the world have an enourmous return rate. If he were to mirror their policies it would reflect in the prices. Instead, he's focused on bringing in the very best goods across the board and offering the best up-front experience possible. The amount of work he and his staff puts in to photograph, measure and describe the garments is one of a kind.

    That said, if he did allow refunds, I'd be more inclined to pick up bigger ticket items from him online.

    I haven't seen the new space yet, but looking forward to it. I understand they're transitioning right now, so its a little crazy for them.

    although admittedly I would probably *order* 2-3 times as much but ultimately keep only some of that extra amount. but I'd be a happier customer. the whole store credit thing really starts to burn after a while. once you end up with store credit, you quickly lose your appetite to do so again.
