Exactly. It varies by jurisdiction. I remember reading a case of some young guy in Maine who streaked a college football game; subsequently, he was classified as a sex offender, couldn't go near a school, had to be monitored, etc. That's obviously the work of some over-zeallous politicians who were working hard to get reelected. In my state, the guy would have gotten a fine.

+1. As bad and unfortunate as crime is in our country, the hyper-freaked out populace ready to go full scorched-earth at a moment`s notice in order to make themselves feel less like nosey assholes frightened of their own shadow is still rather bothersome.

Assuming you even have children, I would say the time you spend background-checking neighbors you probably don`t even bother to greet would be best spent actually talking to your children about safety/responsibility when they are out.

Update: about a month ago he stopped watering his lawn and it all turned brown. Me and some of the people on the street are pretty mad about it and I told them all that he was a convicted sex offender, most knew already anyways the person who lives next door is going to try to make him cut down some maple trees in front of his house because the roots are goingunder the foundations and raising the sidewalk.
