Why a big man like me (I weigh around 364 pounds) can't wear plaids, checks, and vertical bold stripes and have to wear dark to medium colors instead?

why not? I've seen "big" guys (I'm 6'2 and 275 with a 19" neck and 36" arms) wear those patterns and others. The issue is the "fit" rather than the pattern. It's critical for big guys to have well-tailored clothes and I would even go as far as saying MTO by an exceptional tailor will allow to you wear any pattern.

I too am a big guy but short - I agree with NH_Clark comments - clothes must be altered to fit.

But I think that the reason why big guys are told to avoid certain plaids, checks and bold strips are the effects they can give off. There are certain colour combinations that work without problems but then there are colour combinations that are very bold and can hurt/distract the eyes (example: small vertical lines - 1inch or less, equal length, brown and white). On small guys - no problem - but when your chest and back are 3x the size of most normal men - it can become distracting to the viewer and places the viewers attention away from your head and onto your body - it shows off your size. Any comments or opinions on this?

I'm fairly new here - wondering how many people are in the big and tall category over here?

Being myself in the category (+/- a 50 size) I tend to go at least some muted ones, or just a sports jacket rather than a suit. But most important is the fit of the garment!
