Recently I was told about a man who had been a keen hiker/mountaineer in his prime. At his best he stood 6'1" and had a 52" chest and a 32" waist. However, he took to overeating and became so obese he had to use a wheelchair before he turned 60. When I suggested steroid use might have contributed to the overeating and weight gain, I was emphatically informed he was "not a bodybuilder."

Well, maybe he wasn't a competitive bodybuilder, but I find it impossible to believe that a man could achieve development like that without a rigorous bodybuilding regimen and probably some chemical assistance into the bargain. Most guys who get their exercise hiking up mountains tend to be lean, sinewy types, I've found.

A lot of you are knowledgeable about these matters. Do you think it's feasible to achieve a 52-inch chest and 32-inch waist without a lot of weight training?

I'm with you. I've lifted a lot of weights and spent a lot of time around other serious lifters, and nobody gets a 50+ inch chest without lifting seriously unless they're just fat as hell. Maybe he didn't think of himself as a "bodybuilder," but he had to either be lifting pretty seriously or lying about some of his stats.

Maybe he worked in a job like UPS where he was lifting packages all day or a construction site. A thin layer of fat on top... and it's not impossible to have a wide chest.

^Realistically, how many construction workers or UPS employees do you see with 20-inch drops?
