I am happy for Dark Night NOT being nominated for major categories-what a marsupialed juvenile garbage that was (but ten again it is always that, it is BaaaatmAAAn).

Ann Hathaway is absolutely does not belong in any category, she simply cannot act. Her nomination is a great achievement of her PR firm.

Shon Penn stoped going full marsupial and decided to go half-marsupial, doen't deserve even mention.

Bejamin Button is a sorry ass movie just like Slam Dog millioner. Hollywood went braindead completely.

Are Oscars even relevant anymore outside of US?

Benjamin Button wasn't bad just a tad too long. Glad to see The Dark Knight isn't in the Best Picture category. If it wasn't for Heath it'd be average at best.

Wall-E should replace either Benjamin Button or Slumdog as a Best Picture nomination.

Glad I read this. I'll never watch it now. I can NOT watch movies that are "too long" - over 2 hours. There are exceptions, I'm sure, but I think it's easy to throw a bunch of **** up on the screen. It's much harder to make it shorter, tighter, and still conveying the story.

Ben Button was long, but I felt it went really fast and was well paced since the movie can be separated into blocks of Button's life, so it never lingered on one era and moved onto his next decade before things got overdone

Surprised Aronofsky wasnt nominated for The Wrestler

+1 that Rourke and Tomei will probably walk away with wins, tho isnt Anne Hathaway sort of the front runner for it (having won the Golden Globe)

I hate the Oscars. A bunch of spoiled pompous douchebags clapping themselves and each other on the backs. On the plus side, at least I won't have to read about a bunch of Bush-bashing the next day in the papers and on the airwaves. Why actors, who don't live in the real world, think their opinions on politics (on either side of the aisle) are important astounds me.

I just checked the list of nominees - I haven't seen a single film from any of the major award categories. Though I do want to see the Wrestler and Slumdog Millionaire. And I've considered Button.

+1*

On another note, DiCaprio got shafted again.

Edit: a bit of a hyperbole. I like DK better after watching it for a 2nd time last week, but only as a summer flick. Definitely not Oscar / top-5-movie-of-all-time-per-IMDB-rating material.

I'm surprised to not see Gran Torino get any attention. I enjoyed it, and the Academy always seems to love Clint.

I haven't paid a ton of attention to movies this year, but The Reader? I just looked it up and the reviews aren't even any good.

The only reason I care about who gets the nom for best picture is that I like the AMC Best Picture showcase (where they show all 5 back to back.) There are a bunch of movies I wanted to see, but not so much the ones selected.

Why isn't the Wrestler nominated for best pic? Story too simple? Not epic enough? Too straight-forward? Are character studies generally excluded?

Wall-E really needed to be one of the nominations for best picture. I'm so tired of "best animated picture" ****.

Agreed.

The movie was perfect in the simplicity and authenticity of it all.

Maybe it was because of the ending....
