I am in the market for a new car and need some input from you gentleman. I live in the ny/nj area and commute around 50 miles daily. Don't have to get it right now - can wait a few months.

Initially, due to the snowy winters, I was looking specifically for an all-wheel drive car and Audi A5 seemed to fit the bill. However, a friend of mine told me dire stories about his A4 and it changed my outlook.

The new Porsche truck is due out soon and it seems okay.

I don't know too much about cars - would like some input about what to consider. Also, is an all-wheel drive necessary or will be okay w/o it?

I really love the Audi Q5. I've never been in a Q7 but I imagine that could be a little big for most people. The interior is beautiful and the new headlights look great. I am also a big fan of the mercedes M-Class SUVs. For NY, I would personally go for a small SUV opposed to a car. You will be glad you did once it starts snowing.

What are you driving now? RWD is fine with a good set of snow tires...

    Says the Floridian...

I disagree. I live in Montreal and have driven RWD Lexus LS460 and MB SLK320 in the snow. It's not fun.

WRX STi and pocket the difference. Cayenne is for soccer moms.

    Or a 5 series xDrive.

    A5.

And really, there's no problem driving in the snow with FWD or RWD. Just get a decent set of snow tires, and you're good to go. I manage to get around in a small VW Polo (which is a smaller version of the VW Golf) during the winter, and that car has around 60 bhp and FWD. No problems whatsoever.

The girl giving him a bj in the front passenger seat wouldn't be worrying about that.

    Wut?

    SF Fine Living forum mantra:

    1. All SUV's suck (aka soccer mom vehicles).
    2. Any car under 150K is crap.
    3. Porsche is ok, but only the sports cars that start at 100k plus.
    4. Audi is ugly and crap.
    5. Depending on the model and/or poster, Mercedes and BMW are also crap.

I will flog the Caddy mule once more here. I'd go for a CTS with AWD. you could have one pretty well optioned up for 50k. the 304 horse 3.6 direct injection engine is a dream imo. you can't get AWD with the 3. liter either so the 3.6 is the only way to go. (it would be my rec anyhow since I've driven both)

the only problem i have with the AWD model is that around here, they're rare as rocking horse shit.

I also like the new A5. actually i freakin LOVE it. I was actually looking at an A4 convertible in October/November and I didn't buy it because they were getting their first shipments of A5 converts and the time and the A4 just looked old and dull next to it. GORGEOUS cars. the Quattros are $$$ though. for 50k it'd be pretty bare bones i expect.

There's always the SUV route as well but i dont know much about them since i haven't looked in a while. had a pathfinder YEARS ago and loved it though.

I hope you are not questioning this wisdom? [IMG]

    Also:

    6. Depending on poster, your model cost at least 1/3 less that it actually does.
    7. You have no testicles.
    8. The more you shit on someone's whip, the lower the chance you have a ride worth being proud of.

To the OP: SUV route? At 50k you're bumping into going high enough for a well optioned ML with 4matic. IMO, you would be better served with an MDX AWD.
