5 Diamond vs. 3 Star

I live near Washington D.C. and there are no Michelin star rated restaurants in my area. My questions are, does Michelin cover only Las Vegas, New York, LA & San Fran? Also, what are the comparables? I mean would City Zen which is considered a 5 Diamond restaurant translate into a 2 or 3 Michelin Star restaurant?

I can't imagine that any DC restaurant would get 3 stars. Citronelle might get two, and Cafe Atlantico maybe one. I am not that up to date, however.

Michelin stars cover all kinds of territory. I don't know if they're comparable since the criteria are often different.

Wow, Not even City Zen? The Inn at Little Washington is considered 5 Diamond as well, but I've heard from people who have said it overrated.

I forgot them. If anyone got three stars, it would be them. Their heyday may be behind them, however.

I think Michelin only started rating U.S. restaurants just recently in the past few years. You are correct in that they have only rated San Fran/bay area, Las Vegas, New York and I think Chicago will be next. I think other cities are going to be rated eventually.

I am pretty sure they have not rated D.C. yet. Something comparable to Michelin would be the Mobil guide which is a bit more selective in who gets five stars versus the AAA five diamond award. I think they have only 15 or so five stars Mobil restaurants in the U.S. The Inn at Little Washington, CityZen, and Citronelle(sp) are rated four or five Mobil stars for what that's worth.

There's restaurants here in Charlotte with Michelin stars.

I don't trust that Mobil guide. Apparently Pizzeria Paradiso is worth 1 star...I think their pizza sucks.

guides tend to suck in general. It's very hard to put a rating on taste. Now flatwear, china, table linen, etc.... that is easily rateable.

food is open to opinion.

I had a pizza at the Georgetown location a few weeks ago and was disappointed. I remember the pizza at the Dupont Circle location being quite good, but that was awhile ago.

The pizza there is excellent as well as their selection of Belgian beer. Where do you think is better in DC for pizza?
