You know, the kind with meathead bouncers, guido's ordering redbull and vodka, and obnoxious bachelorette parties. We proceed to the back patio, where a band is performing. Each member must either be well over 30, or at least on the cusp. The band was playing top 40 hits and older alternative songs that would be popular with the 20-somethings at the bar. I have to say, it was a very sad performance. All the members were dressing far too young with their TR jeans, Ed Hardy shirts, tribal tattoos, and balding (yet spikey) hair. The songs were played half-assed, and were bad to begin with. I was embarrassed for them.

As I sat and thought about this last night, I felt that there is a clear distinction between 30+ rockers in a ****** cover band, and 30+ rockers that play within a particular genre (or subculture, if you will). It seems that within a given genre, people are much more forgiving about age and focus more on the music. For instance, with rockabilly/surf music, I bet age could work more as a sign of experience. That you've been in the scene so long, you know what's up and how to rock out properly. Granted this could be different from music scene to music scene, but at least you're not playing to a crowd of boozed up, over-tanned suburbanites.

sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. not every1 can be a rockstar__ even rockstars cant be stars 4ever. unfortunately [or fortunately], for most, it's a job__ eg, lounge/wedding/live karaoke bands who fcs take "requests" or washed out 80's rock band who used to fill arenas, now rockin' highscool auditoriums and chain hotel bars. we got to play the cards that we're dealt. i mean, if i were choose between bagging groceries or do something that [at least] i love doing.....

I guess I'm just a music snob, but I feel cover bands are the lowest of the low. And if bagging groceries is one of someone's only options over 30, I would feel really bad for them.

There are 40 and 50 year olds who still rock. Age ain't nothing.

I only like bands that are older and uglier than me. And I'm 30 and hideous. Thank god for the Reigning Sound and Dirtbombs.

Also - I saaw Jesus Lizard last weekend. They were amazing.

Being over 30 and in a band gives you some serious street cred.

i dunno about street cred, but it's cool to see guys who have been playing since teens/20s still playing in 30s. Starting to play in bands in 30s is a bit odd

some guys don't hit their stride until their 30s (you guys watch 30-yr-old Pacquiao kick some ass the other night?). some guys are already totally burned out dinosaurs by the time they hit 30. you probably know people like this in life - those who peak in high school and look like **** by the time they're 25, and those people who are at their best when they are in their 30s and 40s. I guess it's a matter of late bloomer vs. prodigy. one thing about the old guys who can do it though - they have poise and confidence and rock like adults. think of someone like Howlin' Wolf or Chuck Berry. they were in their prime later on in life. Lemmy probably started Motorhead at just the right time, I don't think it would've worked if he was 25.

Many of the musicians who I admire are in there 30's. Wilco didn't really blow up until Jeff Tweedy was over 30. Wayne Coyne and the rest of the Flaming Lips are still rocking. Guided By Voices, Spoon - lots of great bands who are still making great music outside of there 20's.
