It's worth pointing out that the notion of suits having a particular, codified form and function - along with the wearers being mortified at the slightest wrinkle - is a very new phenomenon. They used to be worn with a lot more nonchalance (and not fake sprezz™).

Yes. They used to be worn with more nonchalance…... Especially by two
future kings, Edward VIII and George VI. My grandfather, who was of their
generation, but a humble butcher, was always impeccably turned out when
the occasion called for a suit. Sprezz is often more a matter of class than
aesthetic sensibility.

Agreed, and I think it speaks to the aspirational nature of much of modern menswear that it has become disseminated so widely.

Question. Just received my first 3/2 roll jacket. Middle button seems a little high by an inch to 1.75 inches. Is the middle button USUALLY higher in placement than the top button of a traditional 2-button jacket?

In my experience, both MTM makers I have ordered from have automatically moved the closing/middle button up compared to a 2-button closure. Probably somewhere in the 1” range both times. I’ve had to ask the closing button to be lowered in subsequent commissions, especially since I am a fan of the trad version of 3-roll-2s where it almost looks like the top button hole is cut into the lapel as an after thought, as opposed to the 3-roll-2.5 you see in some Italian tailoring

I appreciate the quick replies, DWW & CA. To me, the 3/2 roll that I received is higher than all of my 2-button jackets/suits, but not as high as a hard 3-button jacket. Before I received this 3/2 roll, I assumed it would be about the same placement as my 2-button jackets/suits.

The MTM company is offering a complimentary remake because of the high button placement and tightness around the front of shoulders. I can post a pic if necessary, but from DWW’s response, I am not unreasonable to assume it should have been at my “natural waist.” Thanks again!
