Is this going to look strange?

Also being a 45L are 3" lapels too skimpy?

I appreciate your thoughts!

In general, the rule is that the lapel width and the tie width should roughly match. I actually think, for a smaller guy, a 3" lapel works fine with a wider tie and can create a nice contrast. But that's because the lapels don't look disproportionately small. I'd guess that for a 45L a 3" lapel will look really small (kind of like the way the lapels on Mad Men look on Don Draper), so wearing a 3.5" tie with such narrow lapels would be a little off.

I wear 3.75" ties with 3.5" lapel suits (44L) all the time. No one notices or cares.

That said, with a 45L, I might get wider lapels if you are going for the "classic" look.

Yes, a 3.5" works well, but anything more is really pushing the envelope.

This is all great input.

Do you think that 'sizing up' the lapel with a 3.5" width will give a more classic look then? I am doing a brooks brothers MTM blazer and want it to last for a while.

I am 45r and 3.75 inch lapels and tie width is just about proportionate. I have even experimented with 4 inch lapels and they are just fine since I have a large face. Does not look anything like the skinny stuff you see on GQ but I'd 3.75 inch is kind of minimum if you are around 45.
