    Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a 3/4 length wool coat that could be worn over a suit, or even just with a shirt/sweater/dress pants. I currently own a wool/cashmere/poly blend car coat in black. I work in a business casual environment, so the shorter coat works okay most of the time (and for casual use on the weekend). However, it really doesn't work well for those times that I wear a suit to work.

I'm thinking something in Navy, 3/4th length, and single-breasted. SFer FourInHand is selling the following at a great price:

    http://www.fourinhand.com/Product.asp?dept=104003&Product=PD80E-07

This looks almost perfect for what I need, although I'm a little unsure about the sizing (which I have e-mailed them about). In the even that it doesn't work out, any other suggestions? I'd like to keep the cost closer to $500 than $1000, so the likes of Burberry etc. probably isn't a realistic option.

    Thanks!

Wait until the day after Christmas sale and snag one from Brooks Brothers. They make a long (45") and short (38") town coat that would fit your needs:

They perform extremely well in the rain/snow and the wool has a good hand to it. During the sale, they would be $593 (long coat) and $534 (short coat). For 3/4 length you probably want the short town coat, but I figured I would include both for your to look at.

That's a good looking coat, and if the sale price was under $600, it would be in my price range. The supreme irony, of course, is that my office is a five minute walk from the Brooks Brothers in downtown Toronto. However, over the Christmas break I will be in Tucson AZ. According to their website, the only BB location in Tucson is a "Country Club" and "Women's Only" location, and seems to suggest that their men's collection is mainly golf-related (and very little in the way of dressy stuff). Which doesn't surprise me, as I find Tucson to be a pretty casual city. Even if they did have some of the dressier stuff, the chances of them carrying a decent selection of winter coats is pretty slim, being in southern Arizona and all... [IMG] Although I'm still surprised at the number of people I see down there in December bundled up like they're at the north pole.

Do the BB boxing day discounts apply to orders via the web, by chance?

Ask them if they'll give you the sale price early before you leave or refund you the difference if you buy it at full price within 30 days.

    ^

Those are really nice topcoats for the pricepoint - but I'm leery of club monaco quality after a few bad experiences. At least with their shirts and trousers from a few years ago the fabric looked nice at first, but held up pretty poorly over time.

    $593 < $600

All Brooks Brothers discounts can be applied to internet orders. I have done nearly all my Brooks Brothers purchases this way.

If you have the patience might I suggest eBay? I got an Aquascutum 100% Cashmere coat for £120 last week, it's in the tailor right now being shortened and brought in which will cost me and extra 50 but overall I got a deal you wouldn't find in a sale section anywhere. You just need the patience to keep a lookout for something you want to come up and it can be a little risky but I'd say if you're lucky it really can be worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion Nms. eBay is an option for sure, provided that one has patience (as you point out). I also find that a number of sellers don't ship to Canada, which cuts down availability somewhat.

I've never heard of fourinhand.com, and despite the terrible website, photography, etc... they don't look too bad for the price actually. Everything is just terribly represented on the website.

I ordered some ties from them. They were very professional with the order and would not hesitate to buy from them.

3/4 overcoats are a rarity in stores, I also recommend ebay for those coats.

The site is run by a SFer (although it's now apparently going out of business). I agree that the site design, etc. leaves something to be desired, but I've heard some others speak well of the products (albeit usually in reference to ties).

On a different (but related) topic, any opinions on preferred brands for rain overcoats?
