All posts get a unique auto-incrementing ID, including posts that are deleted. So the total posts in the statistics reflect posts that have not been deleted and are set to be counted in the stats (I think Squirrelled posts are not counted).

Well, seems we can't really trust the numbering system, since post #2 was posted before post #1.

Yeah, those were converted from the old system, so I don't think they are right up until we went to vBulletin in 2004-ish..? Can't remember when that was now.
