Last trip to the department stores looking for jeans I found that 34 waist is about 2" too tight, but 36" is about 2" too big.

I have three or four pairs of jeans at home that are 34" and fit pretty well after they've been broken in a bit. But 35" waist would probably be ideal. Where can I find 35"W? Also, I am 5"6" and a 29" inseam would be better than 30".

Well the inseam isn't really a big deal since you can easily get them hemmed, but I have a similar problem with not being able to find a 35W, but the way I see it, it's just motivation to lose some weight.

All Gap Inc. brands (Gap, BR, ON) do a 35. What jeans were you trying on?

You are going to have to either try the mass market brands, or play with sizes 34 and 36, unfortunately. The standard cut for jeans is all sizes 28-34, 36, 38. Mass market brands are most likely to make larger sizes and larger odd sizes. However, for a lot of smaller, niche companies, it just isn't feasible.

Their washed pairs run pretty true to size.

Any ideas why 35 or 39 don't exist? Have there been any studies that prove populations to be lacking in those waist sizes?

I would believe that at that akward waist size wouldn't care so much about the 1" difference.

From working at Levis, my manager had told me that the reason why 35 waists arent made is due to the fact that 35 waist size is too uncommon to produce. So maybe thats the reason why?

Usually if you buy a 34 it will stretch out to a 35 eventually, and if you buy a 36 (depending on the fabric) it should shrink to a 35.

Whether or not this is plausible information is a mystery to me.

I would guess that among other factors, there's a judgment that the bigger your waist, the less signficant a one-inch variation is.

Also, I think many of the high-end jeans are designed to look flattering on relatively thin people, so the assumption is that there's going to be somewhat less demand for larger sizes.

Just my speculation, though.
