WAR varies a lot by source. I think Fangraphs is more down on bad defense than Reference or Prospectus. Hopefully the new radar system will make WAR more consistent with better defensive metrics.

Funny, I'm so out of it I didn't realize there's not a standard definition/formula for WAR. To my mind, that makes it less of a "statistic" in the traditional sense than an analytic argument, the underlying premises of which are not always going to be readily transparent.

More -- well, static -- statistics obviously have their (severe) limitations. But at least if you're talking about slugging percentages, earned run averages, fielding percentages, or stolen base totals, you're talking about an objective measurement with a consistent definition.

There are formulas but they are not standard and are limited by shaky defensive metrics. I would warn about the trap that objective measurements lead to a better analysis though. Raw numbers without theory can be just as misleading as metrics with bad theory.

Totally agree. Raw numbers -- or metrics with agreed definitions do have the advantage of facilitating discussion, in those rare instances when you find yourself talking with someone with whom you can have a productive debate. You can argue about whether it's meaningful that Willie Wilson scored more runs than Tim Raines (told you I'm old), but at least everyone has the same understanding of what we mean by "runs" and how to determine how many runs each player scored in a given season. But that's part of what makes them of limited utility as stand-alone measures of anything other than what they explicitly measure. (I.e., batting average might not be a particularly good measure of how good a hitter someone is, but it's an excellent measure of the percentage of at bats in which they get a hit -- for whatever use that piece of data may be.)

I've taken to starting meaningful conversations with some people at work and then devolving them into why the Yankees will be the best team in baseball. Gets people mad every time. Trollolol.

I think there is more evidence that the Ilitch "kids" are more than eager to assume control of the team. Perhaps, they have done so already.

In today's Freep, there is an interview with Scherzer where he says that Dombrowski apologized for the clumsy way the press release (regarding the negotiations) was handled. That's good. But, the damage has been done. Detroit sports media have had a field day with this story. It has tarnished some of the excitement for Opening Day.

I've not been paying attention, but Doug Fister, unfortunately, has not had a good spring training as he is experiencing his 2nd injury. Given his past history with injuries, I'd be concerned if I were a Nationals fan. As rotten as his trade deal was, maybe it is good that we do not have to depend on him. I wish him well.

Good call. Are we going to have to listen to Girardi call him Solly, now that Nuni was sent down?

I've met most of Mike Ilitch's kids on multiple occasions and fully expect Christopher Ilitch (or possibly even Atanas) to take over the team once Mike is no longer in control. I imagine one of the main reasons Christopher hasn't done so already is because his role as president and CEO of Ilitch holdings and Motor City Casino prevent him from doing so (per MLB regulations about involvement in the gaming industry). He will likely need to step down from that position in order to take over ownership of the Tigers and Red Wings, and that's not even getting into the fact that it could be more advantageous, tax wise, for him to take over after his father dies.

Nice come-from-behind win for the Tigers on opening day. We got a little taste of the Ausmus style. He stuck with Alex Gonzales to the end of the game even though our new shortstop was booed earlier in the game. As it turned out, Gonzales, at the plate, was the hero of the day as he hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th which enabled pinch runner, Tyler Collins--who in the heck is he????--to score the winning run. This was Ausmus's other aggressive move: With the scored tied in the 9th, Brad took out Avila, the catcher, to get some speed with a pinch runner. This is something Leyland would rarely do. To beat a good team such as Kansas City felt good.

Maybe we should have a new thread: 2014 MLB

Brad Ausmus certainly knows how to use the new replay rule. In fact, he seems to enjoy it.
Two games; two heroes of the day. Who will be next?
Scherzer threw 100+ pitches. What a horse! This seems rather a high pitch count for this early in the season.
