I haven't read Baseball Digest since I had a subscription when I was about 9. (Not being snarky - I'm sure it has changed a lot since then.)
James is just my point of reference, since he's what I read. I'm sure Silver or anyone working in the field now is fine. In my view, it's not really about finding the one "correct" approach but about getting a grounding in the basic approach.

This is exactly why I clarified my message with "start to the season...". Giants are atop the NL West, but let's be real here, we're only three games above .500 right now.

I'd be very surprised if the Giants won, but with Greinke out indefinitely one never knows

I decided to go w Baseball Digest because of Nate Silver's performance in the election...

Interesting Approach. Wonder why Bonds didn't do the same thing with Balco?

I have not paid attention to Silver's work, but as I understand it his big thing is predicting future player performance. I can see why that would make him valuable in building a fantasy team. "Classical" sabermetrics are less useful in that regard, because they analyze (and often reject, in large part) the utility of traditional statistical metrics in valuing a player's contributions to the team's success. In other words, if your fantasy league uses strike-outs and rbi's as scoring categories, then you want someone who will help you predict accurately how many strike-outs or rbi's a particular player is likely to generate regardless of whether you think those stats are useful measures of non-fantasy productivity.

But to be clear, that's not why I was recommending James. For that purpose, you're probably better served by Silver. James and similar analysts are interesting for the questions they raise about whether you're actually capturing useful information when you track rbi's or strike-outs, and whether there are more valuable ways to measure player productivity (which in this context means contributions to the team's likelihood of success). Totally different concepts. The latter is (to me, anyway) interesting but is generally of limited practical value in fantasy baseball.

Well, Rodriguez and his advisors have the advantage of years of watching how these investigations play out. Bonds' case came much earlier in time, so there was less history to draw lessons from.

Ah, a Detroit Tiger 10-1 victory over the Athletics. Just the way it is supposed to be. Good pitching and lots of hits.

I still cannot believe that I stayed up into the early hours of Saturday to watch the Tigers bleed to death in the 12th inning.

Our bullpen is tough on the nerves. No wonder Jim Leyland smokes.

even potential no-hitters are putting me to sleep lately. Clay Buchholz had one going into the 8th and I couldn't stay awake watching it on TV - and it was a sunday 1pm start!

A couple of Yahoo pundits picked the Tigers to win it all.

    The kiss of death...

The season's early but they definitely look good except for the bull pen.

    Bullpen. Bullpen. Bullpen.

Don't be surprised if they make a trade. They have the goods to dangle out there for a closer.

I think Benoit will be THE guy though.

They are looking great though. Yesterday was a great example of how potent they can be. Jackson and Hunter getting it done. Prince has been on fire.

Don't know what you mean. Bullpen By Committee = always awesome . . .

Enjoy Hunter - he's a gamer. I was sorry to see him leave the Angels.
