This is the crowd they're mainly catering to because it widens their audience and brings in more advertising money. They're just slightly underground enough to be considered cool by a wide enough range of people. Once you start getting too avant-garde with your recommendations like the wire or something you start to lose people, money and influence. It's why most of their best new music recommendations are usually just slightly experimental pop music.

With that said they still do cover a lot of good stuff and some of the articles are pretty good which is why I don't dismiss them completely.
