2010 Insights:

- I am not as Trad in my dress wear as I thought, but it's still okay for my casual wear.
- I should wear my sleeker suits and dress shoes, they're more flattering for my build.
- I like dress shirts with spread collars and french cuffs.

2011 Plans:

- A killer solid navy suit and maybe a navy pinstripe, most likely MTM or bespoke.
- Couple pairs of Lobbs or comparable brand.
- No casual or sportswear, I have enough.
- No Aldens or shell or casual shoes, I have enough of those, too.

I own too many clothes -- most I never wear
I've come to hate light colored shoes and suede does not work in Seattle
No longer interested in wing tips of any kind. On black or brown shoes the brogue pattern is imperceptible from more than 2 meters - not enough contrast. What's the point?
I dislike light-weight wool trousers. They feel fragile and don't drape.
The SF no-break trouser aesthetic is flawed - need a little break to cover shoes when in motion.
I prefer royal oxford to broadcloth shirts

2011 plans
Cull wardrobe by 50%
Buy less but higher quality
Better quality dress belt
Try one unlined shirt collar in linen or voile
Step up from MTM to Bespoke - one navy sport coat
Sell or toss wingtips, suede and band-aid colored shoes - replace with one brown austerity brogue
Find a tailor who will do alterations on sweaters
Replace all silk pocket squares with linen only

2010 Insights:
- Suede shoes are my favorite shoes
- You can never have too many watches
- You can never have too many socks
- HK tailor relationship is a constantly evolving one, with slight improvements each time
- Gary in Beverly Hills in the best tailor in LA
- Dressing my son is as fun as dressing myself
- It's best to always dress 1 level above your clients, never 3-4 levels above
- I never wear ties
- I love flannel
- A black PTB with a Danite sole is the ultimate bad weather business travel shoe
- Gerald Shen has the best MOP buttons on the planet

2011 Plans:
- Implementation of a strict, England-only footwear policy (save for brief trips to Spain)
- I need more Danite in my life
- Suede pennies, black pennies, suede double monks
- Tie budget becomes cashmere v-neck/cardigan budget
- Only spread collars on new shirt orders
- Care less about all of this

Very nice. The white shirt really is underrated around here.

This year:
-Upgraded the sweater collection substantially, such that I don't need any more. Now just have to keep the moths from the ones I have.
-Finally got a pair of black chelseas.
-Stopped shopping online as much as in the past. Rarely visit B&S these days.
-Decided cufflinks can work with sportcoats, though it can be tricky business.
-Went aggressively minimalist (by my standards) for a while, though I think I'm coming out of that phase.
-Concluded I don't need any more shell.
-Realized I have pretty much everything I need and can, for the first time, envision what I will replace and what I won't. In short, I've sorted out my "core" wardrobe.
-Realized my tastes run obscenely English, even more than I had thought.

Coming year:
-Plan to add a sportcoat or two ...
-Could stand to buy a new pair of desert boots but probably won't.
-Expect to wear black footwear more often, what with the aforementioned black chelseas.
-Almost certainly will post a lot of pics of Patrick Macnee. Might even get some new ones.

2. Resoling shoes are well worth it.

3. Aldens aren't as exciting as I thought they were. They don't really hold up all that well.

2011 Clothing Plans:

4. Cull all the not-so-loved shoes in the closet. Need to be a lot more discerning about shoe fit. I think I said that a few years ago, too. Sigh.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everybody!

1. you wanna talk about it? lulz

2. exactly

3. oops

4. i think, i told ya...

merry christmas and an excellent year for your business venture.

ps: would like to to meet you in hkg 2011, when the things get going... ...hopefully.

2010:

1. Wide spread shirtcollars are not that cool after all.

2. I dont care much for suede. (unlike most in this thread, i noticed)

3. I always reach for a light blue shirt. And never for the light pinks.

4. I need more solid ties to balance of checked sportscoats and striped shirts.

5. Dainite is my friend.

6. Knit-ties are overrated.

2011:

More MTM, less RTW.

1 x C&J Alex black, 1 x C&J Northcote for next winter, 1 x dark brown captoe.

I need more wool\\cashmere ties.

New tuxedo.

--

I look forward to viewing this thread in a year, to see what have changed. By the looks of it, i might come to like suede

2010 insights:
-no point in ever buying single sole shoes again, I only like to wear double sole and if I need a sleeker single sole, I have that covered already
-I prefer plain white oxford shirts when worn under a sweater
-I like nylon quilted jackets
-expensive shirts are a waste of $$$, even if the fit and finish are great.
-I still hate suede shoes, a pair of suede laceups ended up being my worst purchase since I never wear them
-Even with a closet full of Alden, Trickers, Paul Smith etc, I still prefer Doc Martens above all else
-rarely being on SF very good for the mind and soul

2011 plans:
-a fair isle lightweight cardigan
-more knitwear in earthtone palette
-lot of "i dont need and wont buy" on the list but most will surely be broken

2010 epiphanies:
Skinny lapels/ties have their place.
Length of jacket is important.
I don't like pinstripes.
I do like chalkstripes.
Pleats on suit pants are OK.
Other colors are fine, but most of the time, a light blue shirt is best.
Staying in shape is better than getting alterations.

2011 plans:
Suits made of heavy but comfortable material (no more 8-9 oz fabrics)
Two 3-piece suits, one in navy flannel & one in medium gray flannel
More blue shirts
Stay in shape

I say this with love, but you have the highest ratio of English love to non-English clothes of anyone.

The only solution for you is the pejsek solution.

Even MBrenin has Nutter.

Aside from footwear and pocket squares, you seem more collegiate than West End or grouse moors.

Thoughts? You know that I like the collegiate stuff and you're always spiffy.

2010:

- bespoke shirts' fit is overrated while the handwork is underrated
- bespoke shoes are only for people who like to look at shoes rather than wear them
- tailors are like children, you need to show them both love and discipline
- one weight of winter coats is not enough, you need at least one for 7C, 0C, and -10C
- silk squares are more versatile than linen
- bespoke DJ is the best luxury item a man can own/wear, but utilization rate is too low

2011:

- more white and blue shirts
- more navy suits
- continue to modify the remaining Vass collection to bring back the "U"
- less Italian trips
frown.gif

- rethink my casual wardrobe, less sprezz, more contemporary
- spend less on clothing in general (yeah right...)

Aesthetics vs utility.

Yes, silk is more versatile stylistically but linen maintains its stiffness and pocket position better then silk.

I am unquestionably bipolar. Partly because of my background -- the American stuff seems more honest -- and partly because the stuff I really like feels ... conspicuous? I wear some moderately waisted coats, and even those are too daring for most folks here. I am, after all, not on the moors, and the year is no longer 1966.

I'm not sure what I want to wear is all that wearable, if that makes sense. Even in London.

For some of us it will always be 1966. Have you planned your summer holidays yet?

2010 Insights: Its not tight, it fits. A crisp, pressed, white linen PS is truly a sartorial chameleon, as is the navy tie. I love the button-down collar. There is no shame in a good calfskin shoe. I don't "do" french cuffs. Gray trousers can be worn with almost anything. In terms of odd jackets, you only really need an earth tone houndstooth sportcoat and a navy blazer. You only really need two or three really good solid colored sweaters, preferably Merino Wool or similar. One should not look at the daily WAYWRN posts and lament their own lack of style, but study the posted ensembles and try to understand why the person happened to pick what they did that morning, which in turn will help you discover your own reasons, and you'll wear your clothes much more comfortably, more purposefully, if you will. Dark ties, dark ties, dark ties. 2011 Plans: Buy two more truly good suits. Find my OneTrouser. (I really do love this idea. Thanks, Foo.) Buy a pair of BB Black Fleece Shell Longwings, my very own OneShoe.

Purchase a solid blue OCBD dress shirt. I cannot believe I don't own one. Purchase a Navy Sam Hober Grenadine tie. (Possibly my very own OneTie, as well). No more gingham. Please, no more.
