I'm not a currency expert, but from my casual observation, the GB Pound has recovered a bit since the lows of late January. This could account for some of the difference you paid.

It's currently at 1.38, which is about as low as it's been yet. I was in London around mid-January, and it was around 1.45 for my trip. It's hovered around 1.5 since before dropping a bit in the past several days.
