I've fallen so out of the loop of new music that I don't think I can tally 10 albums I bought that were even made in 2008.

'Qhnnnl' - Dianogah
'Chemical Chords' - Stereolab
'April' - Sun Kil Moon

And that would be it. And each of these groups (or persons) has been making music for at least ten years, if not twenty.

I am enjoying some stuff from 2006 lately (Rose Melberg, Belle and Sebastian, and +/-) that I got in 2008.

Somewhat into Cut Copy.
One of my favorite albums I picked up was "Sebastian Tellier- Sexuality"

I think Cut Copy is one of those massively overrated pfork hype bands, but the Tellier album is excellent.

I kept hearing Tellier on the college radio station down here. I'd use Shazam on all these different, awesome songs and they kept coming back to him. So I had to cop, and its a solid album.

But one of the year's best?

Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend
Santogold by Santogold
808s and Heartbreak by Kanye West
Universal Mind Control by Common
The Carter III by Lil Wayne (I feel guilty for listing this...)

And that's all I can think of, in no particular order..

^ that's a decent list. I loved the following:

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Kanye West - 808s and Heartbreak
Ratatat - LP3

Disappointed by:
Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs

Why are you making fun of someone when you listed Kanye West as one of the best albums of the year.

I like this line I read about 808s and Heartbreak.

"It wants to be Marvin Gaye meets Daft Punk but it’s more like T-Pain meets Coldplay."

I generally just listen to what I like and don't worry about what critics think about records. I didn't even listen to 10 new albums this year. I honestly don't see how you could make the argument that Metallica's album was better than Kanye's, even if you think Kanye flopped.

A couple of these have been mentioned, but are worth repeating. In no particular order:

Bloc Party - Intimacy
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Mercury Rev - Forever Midnight / Strange Attractor
Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew (Damien Rice's former muse)
Sigur Ros - Med sud.....
Portishead - Third
The Verve - Forth
Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely

To be fair, I haven't listened to either record because I'm not a metal fan and after hearing the Kanye singles I knew I wouldn't like his record. And yeah I don't listen to critics that much but generally check out stuff that gets good reviews to find new music. At least half of the time I don't like stuff that gets good reviews.

But the Metallica album was received by critics better than the Kanye album (78 on metacritic vs. 73).

I think it's disingenuous to write off the opinions of critics when they're the ones that are responsible (at least in part) for the majority of your music collection.
