I only just realised this is out. Has anyone bought it yet? I have the 1998 Criterion DVD, which suffers from some zooming and aspect ratio issues. Impressions on this new one? $42.00 but still, tempting.

I'm often tempted to buy Criterions just because the case design is so evocatively wonderful.

I think that Kurosawa would be mildly shocked, and possibly offended to be associated with anything labelled "The Bomb".

This is one boring ass movie. Magnificent Seven was better.

Come on, man! Surely you must have either seen it or already own it. Would it be worth fleabaying off my old Criterion for this one?

To be honest, I have yet to trade in my (gasp!) VHS copy of Seven Samurai for anything on DVD.

I know... I'm a luddite. Dammit. You caught me!

Um... wow. There's an unpopular opinion. Leave it up to Kent Wang to take Sturges's rip-off over the original. Not that it isn't charming, becuase it is, and it has a lot of star power. But IMO 7S is still by far the superior movie.

Magnificent Seven has a better score though. I'd like to take a Japanese orchestra, koto, shamisen, and etc... have them inturpret Elmer Bernstien's M7 score for a re-release of Seven Samurai.

The only film longer, more boring and filled with more endless camera pans is The 47 Ronin. It took me several sessions over a week to watch that trash.

If you don't like this movie then you don't like Kurosawa. His movies may seem a little slow paced compared to modern movies but are much more subtle. There is more art in the background of a Kurosawa movie than most modern movies.

I would suggest that you rent Ran, by kurosawa. It is his version of King Lear and was done with a big budget in the 70's. Lots of blood and in color.

I liked Rashomon a lot. I doubt I would like Ran as King Lear is my least favorite Shakespeare work.

I'll tell you this, fleabay your Masterworks copy of Ran for the Criterion. I have the Masterworks, it sucks. Not the movie, but you the transfer. The Kurosawa I was least impressed with was Hidden Fortress.
