I know the good ole 3/2 - but is there also a 2/1?

I'm pretty sure that Jesse Eisenberg's jacket on SNL's monologue last week was a 2 button but the lapel roll started just below the top button. I also saw a guy on the street yesterday in a cheap looking suit that was also like that - in his case it could have just been a crappy lapel roll & his lack of knowledge.

I'm not sure 2 buttons lends itself well to that.. Wouldn't it look odd?

2/1 jackets do exist--I've seen a MTM Brooks from the mid-1980's with this configuration. But they're fairly rare, and do look a bit odd, even if you know that they're intentionally cut like this.

I though Jesse's looked OK, a little odd, but the guy I saw waiting at the ATM his looked more like he buttoned it wrong until I looked at how the lapel was rolled.

wouldnt that mean one would have to button only the bottom button of a 2 button jacket? when would that ever look right?

I think in most cases people are saying that they have seen this what they are really seeing is a person wearing a two button suit that is too tight and possibly too short and the person is buttoning it wrong. I have seen fat men button the bottom button and the lapels will roll to it obviously, but I don't see as this as being correct in most cases.

x2. I can't imagine this looking appropriate, unless it's cut like a standard 3/2 but simply missing the bottom button. But what's the point in that?

It works with a higher than usual button stance. Check out the Duke of Windsor for such an example. His were designed for both buttons to be fastened but later in life stopped fastening the top button. The soft construction allows it to be buttoned either way. Fastening only the top and not the bottom would throw off the proportions.

I can't find a good still of Eisenberg but he definitely isn't fat nor was the guy I saw yesterday.

I went and watched the SNL monologue clip again and I think he may just have a 2 button with the lapel rolling into the top button.

The one I saw yesterday was from about 3 feet away and it sure looked like the lapel was pressed to below the top button though, I didn't think to look at the buttoning points which would probably make it easier to tell if it's a 2/1 or a just a misrolled 2.
