I know this is a personal choice but I'm curious to see what other people think on the subject. I grew up in a eastern-euro household and everything that was fancy/formal revolved around gold. It kinda stuck with me and despite the fact that platinum is more expensive it doesn't always project that. Its seems to me platinum is easily mistakable for silver, stainless or tungsten etc at first glance whereas gold is pretty much unmistakable. I've read some of the other threads on it from 2 years ago and wanted to see what the current consensus might be.

I have a platinum wedding band, and I don't particularly care if some idiot thinks it's silver, tungsten, or depleted uranium. I like it, and my wife likes it.

This is personal choice if you like the yellow or white. I personally do not like the look of yellow gold.

You may also want to consider if you want to match the partner's band color. And though platinum is expensive, white gold is another alternative for you.

As to whether someone thinks it's silver....well that's their problem. You need to be comfortable with what you wear. Whether it be silver, white gold, YG, tungsten, titanium, platinum or an invisible one. And frankly, I think every will assume it's WG or platinum as silver might be too soft and prone to tarnishing for everyday use.

Platinum is a better relative value right now.

Platinum's main benefits over gold is that it wears better in the long run and that they can be worn by those who are allergic to metals.

Otherwise, get whatever you think looks best.

I guess i should have been more clear I don't necessarily care what others think but to me a things of importance/value should look it and to me that silvery color doesn't do it entirely. Maybe that will change over time, I don't have anything platinum now and my fiancee has both rings in platinum so there is the matching argument.

I just cannot relate, at all, to the idea of disdaining something because it might be mistaken for something else that's less expensive. It just doesn't make sense to me. If that's a cultural value with which you grew up, I think you'll be better off if you shed it and stop thinking that way.

platinum, i assume most 'silver' color wedding bands to be ethier platinum or white gold, silver doesnt exactly look the same as white/plat and the rhodium finish on them, nore does it really matter to me.

You may want to consider palladium. It's very similar to platinum but is cheaper. Still more expensive than white gold, however.

Palladium is growing in the jewelry business. It's in the platinum family but less dense and about a quarter the price. I like things that are a little different. Can you really buy depleted uranium jewelry? where?

I picked platinum because my wife's engagement ring was platinum, so she wanted a wedding band that would match it, and we wanted our wedding bands to match each other. Also, it looks nice. A neat thing about platinum is that is resists metal loss when it gets scratched; the metal tends to just moves around, so you can get it polished more times than gold.

You would have to get a license for depleted uranium:

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations at 10 CFR 40.25 establish a general license for the use of depleted uranium contained in industrial products or devices for mass-volume applications. This general license allows anyone to possess or use depleted uranium for authorized purposes. Generally, a registration form is required, along with a commitment to not abandon the material. Agreement states may have similar, or more stringent, regulations.

And- its still somewhat radioactive.
