Quick question before I make a purchase:

In general, would an AE 13D fit like a 12EEE? I know that sometimes extra width gives extra length (or feels like it)...

Every last is different. On some lasts I am an 11.5 D or 11EE and on the 0 last I am a 10.5 EEE.

It's the 8 last (similar to 2).

Other than the 5 last (Park Avenue) which fits me fine in a 13 D, I have no reference for the 8 last 13D or 12EEE.

Don't buy it without trying it on - every shoe is different - even the same style from the same manufacturer. Take it from someone who has been burned ordering the same size in the same style shoe from the same manufacturer but in a different color. I also wear size 13 shoes and i know how difficult it is to find comfortable and stylish shoes - but unless you're very lucky you'll regret buying the shoes without trying them on first..

in most cases as long as you know the way the last fits, you will be fine...

My take on the 8 last is that it is wide in the ankle and narrow in the toe. I wear a 9.5 or 10 D in the 0 last, and the fit is very good. I have a couple pairs of AE on the 8 last, and I am not thrilled with the fit. Both are 9.5 D, and both are a little tight in the toes, and too loose in the heel. Yesterday at Nordstrom Rack, I tried on an 8 last shoe in a 10.5 B, and the fit was far better than the fit of the 9.5Ds that I have. I am not very familiar with the 5 last, but my guess is that if you size down in length and size up in width on the 8 last, you may get a weird fit. At least that was my experience when I tried that experiment. Of course, it all depends on your foot shape.

Depends on your feet. If your foot length measures very different than your heel-to-ball length, it makes sense to try a variety of strategies: short and stout, long and narrow, etc., as you look for a shoe that has enough room in the right places and conforms well to your foot as you walk.

If your foot measures up real well into a standard size, then it's probably foolish to deviate from that size thinking the fit might work for you. So if a 13D is OK on your unusual feet, a 12EEE might be OK too, or better. But if a 13D is great for your perfect feet, the 12EEE will be too short and too wide.

Also what was said about sizing being different across makers & models & lasts is very true as well.

Thanks for everybody's responses. The 8 last shoe in question is the Thayer monk strap. The brown suede is damn nice.

Having never seen Thayer's in person, do they come off as being quite pointy? I might take a chance on them, might not.

From various responses I get the idea that 12EEE AE's measure about 13" length and 4 3/8 to 4 7/8 inches in width. Theoretically that doesn't sound so bad unless they really taper at the toes.
