Maurizio Altieri (Carpe Diem, Linea, etc) did that way before him. Well he'd bury the leather not the shoes, he's not that stupid.

I have some shoes that are 4 years old, and you don't have to worry about mold, worms etc. I'll sell them for a paltry $2k.

Were the shoes buried in a trunk? Or just covered with dirt?

If I had an old pair that I didn't really care for, or wish to fix up, I'd do this just for shits and giggles, and see what happens a few years down the line.

Can't imagine they would ever smell right, and would likely continue to deteriorate when worn.

I don't know alot about high end shoes, but I do know that unlike whiskey and wine they are made of dead animal skin, surely sticking them in the damp and bacteria filled soil for four years is just going to make them rot a bit. Unless of course you protect them from that, in which case they may just as well have sat in a cupboard for a few years.
Leather products I have owned (sailing gloves, not quite the same thing I realise) that I left wet in a dank dark corner for just a month or so smelled foul pretty much from then on. But I am willing to sell my aged leather gloves, it will be tough but for the right figure I will part with them, if the shoes are 'worth' 12k I should get a few hundred for them at least.

I wonder if there is some sort of shoe mummification process that involves sticking a red hot hook up its nostril scrambling up its brains, and then yanking them out so that you can pack its head with sawdust and beeswax.
