I don't think it would be appropriate to buy someone else's wife jewelry.

Why can't you get them something more generic for the both of them like a couples spa day?

Something that both can enjoy is always good. Shopping for jewelry (except for watches) is really a big hassle and waste of time, esp. for a woman you have no interest in.

A high-end vintage red? Personally, if I were in your situation, I'd go for something that everyone has a use for: Persian rug.

Sorry, I should have been more clear - the question is what should HE get her. I should be so lucky

The traditional 10th anniversary gift is tin or aluminium, so your buddy could get creative with that. Perhaps get tickets for an experience they'd both enjoy, but present them in an antique tin that references an inside joke they share.

However, if he wants to go the jewelry route, the 10th anniversary gems are traditionally blue sapphires and/or diamonds.

He could take the missus on a cruise. That way they both get pampered for a week or so and these days, there are some great cruising bargains available!

-5 points for reading comprehension. A trip perhaps? I think anniversary gifts are better if they are experiences or things for both people, and have some durability even if only as a memory.

we had our 10 year this year, 3 young kids.

arranged babysitting - that was actually about the most expensive part of the project

fly to new orleans, stayed at a nice hotel in the french quarter for 3 nights. 6 good meals, 3 good sets of music, a tour and 3 mornings where my wife could sleep as late as she wanted.

my wife was very happy, and I enjoyed myself, too.

by the way, my wife's birthday present every year is a trip by herself away from home for a few nights, I take care of the kids and she gets to sleep late.
