1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

I love how there's some sort of fairground behind it and that maglev train goes in--total Disney fare.

It's not maglev, it's a rubber wheeled monorail built for the '62 World's Fair (As previously mentioned). Which is even classier.

The South end of the monorail was pinched together to make room for a shopping mall, so that there's only room for one train at a time.

San Francisco has an apartment tower that looks very similar. You can envision people with deluxe reel-to-reel players and shag carpeting living there, but the reality is probably far less pretty evidenced by all that cheap patio furniture on the balconies.

in ugliness nothing will ever top Venturi's Mother's house for me. [IMG] In his defense, I don't think Venturi set out to make something 'pretty'.

Could your ex-wife and my fiance in fact be the same person?

Are you attracted to pathological liars who also have an uncanny ability to spend 187% of available funds?

This might be used against you in a court of law as evidence of premeditation, were anything to happen to her. Just so you know.

Nothing will ever happen to her.
Like my mother always said, "God takes care of good people and idiots."

Besides, she's off damaging someone else's finances now. And I couldn't be any happier about it.

+1. I've really started to appreciate the brutalist government and university buildings I see. I'd love a brutalist home.

Guilford County's district court and jail buildings leave me feeling sufficiently Brutalized.

urban design proposals that would be lambasted today with Pruitt Igo and Boston City Hall being the most notorious of such projects to garner critical praise polarized from the general public reaction. ..... definitive critical reception is completely unrelated to initial impressions (Vietnam Memorial in DC, Yamasaki's WTC) .
Interesting contrast in the final impressions of those two destroyed Yamasaki projects, Pruitt-Igoe and the WTC

Yeah, I always wondered if his mother would have preferred just a drawing of the house that she could put on her fridge.

2009 Nov is typically apt description of hostility to pedestrians
May 2009 is wrong (Standard Hotel, NYC)
    Hespeler Library of Cambridge, Ontario.

    Truth: http://www.kunstler.com/eyesore_200901.html
"The true irony in the story of this building is that only forty years before they tore the original down in 1967, several fire fighters gave their LIVES to save the city hall from a fire that otherwise leveled the entire downtown.
After they saved the building, Eisenhower huffed and puffed and blew it right down."

The New Zealand Parliament building, known as "The Beehive", is no beauty.

    It deserves its nomination.
