Planet Earth is on my wishlist. Feel free to expand on your 10. I need ideas. I already have 700 movies and i'd like to buy stuff on BR that i don't already have, though I will undoubtedly replace a lot of them as well.

I'm not going to make a top-ten list, but a few of my favorites haven't been mentioned (that come to mind, anyway):

Taxi Driver
High Noon
The Searchers
Rocky
The Empire Strikes Back
Alien
Bridge on the River Kwai

And a whole bunch of Clint Eastwood movies.

I'll explain the why of this list first. When I think of 10 Movies Everyone Should Own, I think of films that are part of the culture, where you'll miss a lot of subtext to day-to-day life because you have no idea what everyone's on about. As Oscar Wilde once said of Shakespeare's plays - you sit through them for the quotations. Let's go:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Godfather
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars
Casablanca
West Side Story
Pulp Fiction
Enter The Dragon
Chinatown
The Terminator

I'd never heard that. Will quote in the future.

Wanted to add 2 more movies that seems to draw a lot of feelings out of me.

Dancer in the Dark
The Wrestler

Really horrible of thinking of 10 really great movies all at once.

I will second Brazil and Delicatesen.

The notebook is ok up until the vomit-inducing ending "OMG it's us! It's us!" Mostly it wins because of Rachel McAdams, whom I adore.

I'm glad to see some recs for King of NY. I saw it when I was going through blu-ray.com and i've never seen the movie. Gonna add it to the top of my list.

I refuse to even associate with people who don't like "The Shawshank Redemption". There is something off about them.

It's not a bad movie, but it's over-rated.
