We can rechristen the pocket square a "je ne sais quoi" -- when someone asks about that, you can just look at it, pull it out, twirl it in the air like a pom-pom and say, in an uninterested sort of way, "Oh, this? This is just a little je ne sais quoi."

I prefer: "Oh this? Let me show you something ..."

It's a shirt with a half placket, sort of like what Americans think of as a "polo shirt" or "rugby." Instead of using a knitted fabric, however, it uses wovens.

The first OCBDs were popovers. Here's a Brooks Brothers OCBD from the early 20th century.

I had some made at the tail end of last summer, and really liked wearing them when the weather allowed. I'm looking forward to wearing them as often as I can this summer.

A popover is unusual enough in the wild that it should have its own eccentric name. The strange word correlates with its infrequent appearance.

I am not against this. But, to me, popover doesn't ring as eccentric but rather ... I can't quite put my finger on it. Childish?

Greg may be on to something; my resistance might be rooted more in my American'ism than the word itself. I really don't know. I think of it this way - when someone asks me "that's a nifty take on a shirt, what is it?" I am not, I repeat not, going to reply with "popover". If my 5 year old was wearing it, I'd be happy to call it that, but not me.

Maybe that's it - it just sounds like something a child would wear, not an adult. And saying I'm wearing one feels kind of ridiculous. And so, I see them, and inherently shy away.

I'm just letting you in on my psyche, if I'm the exception then bravo and carry on. Clearly there are others who don't have my hang-up with it.

ps - I'm really just pointing this out for Greg in case, at end of season, he has a stack of fantastic ones and can't put his finger on why they didn't move, there might be some explanation here.

I understand the dislike for the word - but I'm not hearing a lot of suggestions! How would you call them... Pullover shirts? Shirt polos? Half-placket shirts? Giorgio shirts? Agneshirts?

Thanks, dww.

Greg, I am down with the popover term. I think it sounds a little funny and that's probably why like it.

"Popover" is fine, if you won't wear them because you don't like the term, then don't. The alternatives (polo [inaccurate], rugby [same], woven long sleeve half placket shirt [ridiculous when a shorter alternative is available]) are no good. The shirts have been around a long time; why should the name change because you saw a mediocre version at J Crew and can't get over it?

Got a new bow tie on my way. Sure didn't last long on my no-spending spree.
