I had hoped to stop by the Aurland shoe factory on Wednesday but it was not to be. On Tuesday we spent the day outside Bergen on a textile-industry driving tour. We visited the Textile Industry Museum in Salhus, which chronicles the decline of this once thriving industry in Norway. The museum is in a former factory with lots of old late 19th/early 20th century machines that they turn on and demonstrate the whole process from raw wool to finished garments. It included circular knitting machines like Merz uses. We then visited three factories that have somehow survived: Oleana in Ytre Arna, Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk in Hjelmås, and Janusfabrikken in Espeland. Oleana is an “Économusée”, which means we were literally allowed to wander all over the factory and interact with the workers as they worked.

On Wednesday, between returning to one of the factories to claim a 50% off discount that had been missed and spur-of-the-moment stopping at the Dale of Norway factory, the schedule was thrown off. Aurland will have to wait til next time.

Not sure if it is appropriate to post here (will clear this comment if it isn't) but Bergdorf here in NYC has picked up a limited run of PI as part of a seasonal capsule of emerging designers. Stopped by on break earlier today and most sizes of the popular designs sold out on NMWA are still available.
