All about Levi's

Hey guys, I've got a Levi's question. I've always worn Old Navy jeans but want to step up the stylistic ladder. I've lost 60lb since January and have another 15 or so to go, so I don't want to buy a wicked expensive pair of jeans (or raw denim) only for them to be too loose in a few months. Levi's seem to be the perfect compromise for me.

I'm 24 years old, 6'3", 200lb. Pretty average build but I look skinnier than others because of my height. Waist (bellybutton) measures 35", natural waist probably closer to 32-33". I've got relatively wide hips for a guy (40"), not too bad but wider than many male models so it's tough to pick out jean style from a picture.

Anyways...what style/fit would you recommend? I'm not really interested in skinny jeans, but want jeans that simply fit well: not too loose, not skin tight. I don't know the first thing about Levi's (except for that 501 was the original) or how they fit, or what would look good with someone of my build. Any suggestions?

If you are just looking for a regular pair of Levis buy a pair of 505's. They are a straight leg jean, about as basic as you can get.

The 569 is a staight leg jean with a more relaxed fit.

The 520 from levis might be a good choice if you change your mind and want a skinnier fit.

I would say if you are set on Levis you should probably go with 501's. They are basic, relatively stylish and inexpensive. Once you've lost the weight your looking to lose look into some repros or something on the higher end of the spectrum.

buy some shrink-to-fit 501's that fit your waist snug before you shrink them. Then hot-soak them in the tub while you're wearing them so that they only shrink enough to fit you rather than getting too snug. Then, once you lose more weight, hot soak them again while wearing them and they'll shrink some more.

Hey Zach, do Skinners stretch out at the waist and hips after some wearing and washing? I just got a pair in size 28 (naturally a 28 waist) and they are almost unbearably tight around the waist. Thanks.

after some wearing, yes. I wear mine pretty hard and they stretched out maybe an inch or a little more in the waist after about a month. When I washed them in cold water they shrunk back down, and they've begun to stretch, but they haven't stretched back to the size they were before (and I've worn them probably 20 times since washing them).

Are there any brick and mortar retailers in the midwest who carry LVC or is the Levis store in Chicago my only real brick and mortar option?

I love my Levi's. All of my Levis are washed, and are so soft, they're like butter. No, I am not kidding. They are ridiculously, smoothly, baby's bottom soft. No, softer than that even. I gush and gurgle whenever I slip a pair on.

So far, I have a pair of destroyed 527's, some 514's and 511 skinny's. Ridiculously soft washed jeans and an absolute steal for each pair (30 or less each pair).

i picked up some heshers on a serious discount in decmber. they're great looking and super comfortable. i didn't expect them to stretch out as much as they have, though.

Do you wash and dry them? I just got a pair of rigid 505's and am not 100% sure how to care for them.

I was at Penny's the other day looking at 501 STFs. I noticed that some were marked 501 and others were marked 501xx. I looked at both pairs inside and out and could not notice a difference other than the marking on the label.
Is there a difference?

These were just the basic pairs selling for $30-$40. Penny's doesn't carry any LVC or super premium Levi's.

Bring me up to date on Levis. I was a loyal Levis customer until probably the mid 80s, when it seemed the quality of the material dropped way off. It seemed like it became thinner, cheaper, and wore out vey quickly. (Levis Dockers were the first khakis I owned back then, too, but I dropped them when I noticed the same thing happening with their quality). Since then, I always just lumped Levis in with all the other cheap, disposable consumer junk foisted on us by big crappy corporations peddling crummy Chinese crap. I was disappointed to see them going that direction.

So fast forward to the present, where I start hanging around here and getting a real appreciation for better denim, which seems like a big upgrade over the stuff I had been wearing (LL Bean, Polo). But I notice that a lot of people still like regular old Levis. Did Levis improve since I owned them last, do people not care that they seem to be made with cheap fabric, or was it my imagination the whole time?

I wouldn't mind buying reasonably priced jeans again, but not if they are going to fall apart.

I was a toddler in the 1980's so i can't really do much in the way of quality comparrison.

I think for what you pay, Levi's red tab line has quite a few decent offerings. I really like my STF's as well as a pair of rigid 520's i got a week or two ago. Levi's as a whole has quite a bit more than it once did. I think the LEVIS vintage collection offers quite a lot in the way of details. You might check out their website, or a levis store if you are able.
