Anna Matuozzo - A walk-through of my bespoke shirt purchase in Napoli.

Here is a walk-through of my experience buying a shirt from Anna Matuozzo. I hope this helps anyone interested!
There has not been a new post about Anna Matuozzo in a few years, so I thought I would share my recent experience and post some information for the Forum.

First, Anna's shop is not in the same neighborhood as the rest of the big names in Napoli. (It also should be noted- no one in Napoli seems to know who she is. I don't think she does much business with locals.)
Her showroom is in the living and dining room of a beautiful 1st floor apartment.

Here are pictures of her location in Napoli:

Parking is very limited! When you come to the building you can see the buzzer with her name on it:

Straight ahead to the stairs, up 1 flight and her door is on the left.

For your first visit you will pick out your fabric and she will measure you.

I'll post another message to break this up a little.

The first fitting. She took my measurements and asked me about how I would wear the shirt (sport, formal) and then I picked out my collar and cuffs. No need to post pics of that.
After about 20 days Simona (her daughter) sent me an email and let me know that the test shirt or "prova" was ready for me to try.
She attaches a scrap collar and cuffs to the shirt for this fitting.

Anna fit the shirt and pinned it. She also marked where the monogram would go. She suggested a different collar than the one I had picked- she thought it was a bit too spread for my face. Time to wait again!

After another month my shirt was ready for pick-up. I was in a rush this day so I just stopped and picked the shirt up. Usually Anna and her daughters love to hold my children and make small talk -

they are very sweet ladies - but this last trip was rushed because I had to get in and out.

Here are a few pics of the unwrap and final product:

Note the hand stitching:

Beautiful big MOP buttons:

Hand stitching on the front yolk:

Hand attached armscye:

Embroidered monogram:

So- that was my experience. I hope this helps!

Here is Anna's email-

Btw, out of curiosity, who are the more famous local shirt-making establishments you've encountered (to locals)?

Just dropped another dozen pics- if there is anything you wanted to see let me know!

I must admit that I don't know the answer to that question. Napoli is a very poor city. It seems that most locals buy suits at low end shops for about 100-200 Euro. I went with a friend and picked up a beater suit at that price and it was made in Napoli but was not fully canvased, etc. Similar to a $500 suit in the States.
For shirts I have head the name Borriello from some friends in the Carabinieri. They get uniform shirts made there. But I also know that they seem to buy from tailors who do not have store fronts and just make clothes in their homes.
I'm trying to crack into this nut. I'm just a military guy so my budget doesn't allow me to buy Matuozzo shirts more than this once. I am trying to get into the next layer of sarti in Napoli- same hand made "fatto a mano" craft without the Matuozzo/Rubinacci prices.

I'll make a thread when I do!

Perhaps someone here can answer this question. I will be in Naples for only 2 days. Not enough time for a prova. Can I get a less-than-full-bespoke shirt from Anna where she measures and then sends me a final shirt? Probably more of a MTM option? I'm not that hard to fit.

If you set it up in advance, there is a chance they can do a fitting within two days after first meeting you. You'll have to pick a fabric they have on hand, however.

Foo is right- you should be able to get that set up before you arrive. She has a ton of shirting in house so you should be fine. Let me know if you need help setting up a quick turn around. I can email Simona and ask.

I have access to USPS so I'd also be glad to proxy for you if you need it. Italian postal service is sketchy. PM me if you need a hand.

I had to edit this like 6 times. That's what happens when you mix cognac with SF.

What was the price for this shirt?

She currently charges 350-400 Euro, this shirt was 400 Euro so about $520 US.

And please don't take this disclosure as braggardly- this was my Christmas present from my wife. (This and the Indiana Jones BluRay box set.)
This is a one time thing for me.

Wow, that's up there.

I'd like to have some great shirts like that, but my ceiling for shirts tops out at a pretty low level, ~$150 or so, cause an elbow blow-out/rip/stain would be game over. I don't want to have to worry about my shirts if I'm leaning against a wall or horsing around or something. Or to put it another way, I don't want what I'm wearing to change my behavior, and I'm not into having clothes for special occaisions. But anyway, Merry Christmas!

This is a first for me- I have a few bespoke shirts from Asia but most of my shirts are John Nordstrom, Robert Talbott, etc. While I'm here in Napoli I'll have a dozen or so shirts made and that should last me for a long long time. But my Talbott shirts are close to $300 so I guess it isn't a huge stretch when you consider the amount of hand sewing that goes into one shirt.
That said I will not be wearing it to move pianos!
Thanks!
