Another midnight blue tuxedo thread

I'm in the market for a midnight blue tux, but haven't found much. Due to time (the event is at the end of this month), I've been looking for RTW. I'll be going to about 4-6 black tie events per year so I think buying versus renting is the best choice in the long run. The only one I've come across that I tried on and liked, was a Zegna tux at Neiman Marcus, but it was it of my budget ($2995) to pay for a RTW tux.

Ideally, I'd like to find one with a dark shawl collar, slim fit, double vent, and single button in the price of $1000.

I found this one on Mr. Porter and was wondering what you all think about it. I've been a long time lurker and value your thoughts and not having any experience with online or Spencer Hart, need advice. This one is only a single vent, so still not sure if I fully like it, but at this point, I can live with it for now until I can go MTM.

That tux has far too skinny lapels. Don't think so fashion forward and think classic. Midnight blue is a great color choice, but this is going to end up looking like a spilled cup of ****, when you're wanting to look like a million bucks. Focus on fit, quality, and (CLASSIC proportioned) style.

Honestly sounds like you'd be best off doing MTM from Kent Wang for around $1000. If you are going to 4-6 events a year, I would take the hit on this one and I would take the time to do your black tie properly.

I have seen some good ones online from Martin Greenfield, I think J Crew may have one in midnight at your price point, though again I would google around here and online and try to take the time to find a proper full canvas tuxedo with classic proportions and correct details (peak or shawl, one button, jetted pockets, ventless or double) that will carry you through many events and remain timeless.

Is this $1000 including shoes, links/studs, shirt, bowtie, and waist covering? If you're going to 4-6 events a year like you say, sounds like you need to make a real investment in your black tie.

I am certainly no authority, but one should know the rules of black tie and then adhere to them. This is not the lane to be breaking sartiorial rules in my book.

The budget I listed is just for the tuxedo. I would love to have the time to do a MTM, but just not sure if I can get it in time. I tried on the J.Crew one at a store, but they don't offer a shawl collar version. I have been doing some online searching, and liked the one from Suit Supply, except they don't offer the collar as well.

I wish I took some photos of the Zenga tux that I tried on so I can get some thoughts on it and for some reason, I can't find it online.

I'm going to agree, it is a bit fashion forward. It's okay when you are younger, but might look dated in a few years when lapels get thicker.

Your tuxedo should either be double vented or no vents. No vents is more technically correct but there are definitely some well dressed individuals who prefer double vents. Single vents should be avoided at all costs, though you can have vents sewn shut if you like everything else about the tuxedo.

Definitely do your research before buying. In addition to searching through this forum (there are a lot of tuxedo threads), check out www.blacktieguide.com. Also, be careful that your tuxedo is in fact midnight blue and not another shade of blue.

I hate renting a tuxedo which is one of the reasons I bought mine even though I probably go to less black tie events than you do, but I'd rather rent once and end up with a MTM tuxedo that I love than buy a placeholder that will be more expensive and that you won't like as much. In the meantime, a tuxedo shirt, cummerbund/vest and self-tie bow tie and good shoes should be on your list if you don't already own them.

Brooks Brothers is not super slim fitting, but I've found them to be a decent source for tuxedo accessories. I have not seen a midnight blue tuxedo from them, however, and believe a decent amount of their tuxes are Madison cut.

Comically slim would be J Crew lapels...I like the lapels fine. I plan on having a tuxedo made this spring. Was hoping to have one before a party at the end of the month but the invitation is black tie optional.

Of course I tried on a beautiful one at Tom Ford for a mere $5,200.

J-Crew carries midnight blue peak lapel but lapels are on the slim side.

I've contacted Kent Wang. Is this my best option? Where are all the midnight blue peak lapel tuxedos hiding?

I've heard generally good things about Kent Wang. My tuxedo was made by Hemrajani and I'm quite happy with it. If $1,000 is the budget for your tuxedo (not including other items), you should be fine at either place. Your other option is to look locally; where are you located?

Just a note to anyone buying a JCREW tux .......the arm hole is WAAAYYY to tight to wear a French cuff with them which is absolutely ridiculous considering it is a tux and should be worn with a tux shirt which has - traditionally - a french cuff.....buyer beware.

Amazed no one else has mentioned this.
