2 days in Iceland, Snaefellsjokul or South

I have 2 full days in Iceland in early Septembe and I am thinking about renting a car to tour either

1)Golden Circle and to Hofn
2) Golden Circle and Snaefellsjokul

If I do Hofn, I'll probably spend the night somewhere around Vik. I'll stay in Reykjavik if I'm going to Snaefellsjokul.

For those members who've been to both, which route would you recommend? Recommendations to restaurants along the way is also appreciated.

Was in Reykjavik last month but only went to the Golden Circle.

As for the restaurants, the Icelandic/Asian fusion restaurant Fishmarket (Fiskmarkadurinn) was very good - I even bought their cook book. I liked the Icelandic Fish and Chips too. The Icelandic hotdog place (I forget the name) was mediocre. I didn't much like Thrir Frakkar (more traditional Icelandic cuisine) but other people on Chowhound seemed to have liked it.

I doubt there are many quality restaurants outside Reykjavik. There are 300k people in Iceland and 200k are in Reykjavik. There are 100k horses though and I saw people taking riding tours!

Ultimately I decided to go to the south. It's a beautiful country but the food is a disappointment. Despite the access to great fish, most fish dishes I tried are over cooked, over salted and/or over sauced. I did try the Thrir Frakkar and it was nothing special. Poorsod, I'm surprised you didn't like the hotdog, I thought it was one of the better things I ate on the trip. Conclusion: Go for the scenery, not the food

Yeah, the best restaurants are definitely in Reykjavik. Anywhere else and you're going to get more "salt of the earth" type folks and food, if you'll forgive the pun.

Glad you enjoyed the scenery though. Nowhere else like it.

I liked Grays Papaya better.

Why didn't you try Fish Market? I found I great value for the money. Much better than Thrir Fakkar

Didn't make reservations

Went two years ago and it was awesome. My favorite trip. Golden circle is a fun little day long drive.

I went to a restaurant - not a foodie, never remember the names and your back anyways, but we had puffin and minke whale. It was quite an experience. Glad you enjoyed it
