Questioning assumptions - Tyrwhitt "hand tailored canvas chestpiece"

I know everyone here swears that Tyrwhitt suits are fused, but bear with me. There website now says that their "Saville Row inspired suits" have a "Woven Chest Canvas With Horse Hair" which means a "Chest canvas traditionally tailored with a floating chest piece using a bias woven canvas made of blended cotton, horse hair and polyester, hand tailored into the chest to hold the elegant English chest silhouette."

"Hand tailored into the chest"... Isn't this canvassed?

Could be half-canvassed, but what they're describing is some sort of canvassing, certainly.

"Canvassed" as we use it (vice "fused") basically means "not fused". All suits with structure have some canvas in them. The question is whether there is also a layer of interlining fused to the body fabric.

Whether that matters to you is a separate issue again.

However, I have never heard of a fused "floating chest piece"... If it is floating, it would indicate that its sewn and not glued/fused

or am I missing something?

I interpret "hand tailored canvas chestpiece" as a "meaningless marketing phrase."

My cheapest fused suits have floating chest pieces, just like my more expensive nicer suits. If you cut open any cheap fused suit, you may well find a floating chestpiece in there, floating away right next to the fused lapels and quarters. Go to the nearest store selling inexpensive suits and see if you can feel a layer of padding in the chest that floats between the facing and the lining. That's a floating chest piece. Some companies have seized on this feature as a selling point of a suit, even though it has nothing to do with whether the suit is canvassed or fused in the places that count, i.e. the quarters and lapels.

I get the CT catalog all the time and when i look at their suit section, I think that CT suits are 1/2 canvassed; lapels and chest area is canvassed, but from chest down, they are fused.

With completly fused coat, you would still see chest piece that is cotton matteral to give the coat fullness. This is NOT canvase. But underneath the fabric, there would be a layer of rubber that is fused with the fabric.

I actually emailed Tyrwhitt one time, they said that there was a horsehair/polyester blend chest piece. I'm pretty sure from waist down it's fused.

Sometime I am going to sacrifice a crappy fused jacket to show you guys a vivisection with both the fused body fabric and "floating canvas chest piece" visible.
