Campbell Cooper Waxed Cotton Motorcycle Jacket

Campbell Cooper, a British manufacturer, offers a black waxed cotton motorcycle jacket for £60....

General Information

Campbell Cooper, a British manufacturer, offers a black waxed cotton motorcycle jacket for £60. How good is it? It's impressively well-made, but the fit is enormous.

Latest reviews

Pros: Very nice heavy waxed cotton. Construction seems durable.
Cons: A size XS is way too big for me (size 38 chest).
I was lusting after a waxed cotton motorcycle jacket. I scoured eBay for second-hand Barbours and Belstaffs, but I couldn’t find anything less than $250. But when I expanded my search terms, I found a British company called Campbell Cooper. They make waxed cotton jackets, tweed caps, and quilted jackets, among other traditional British clothing. Their prices are quite low, and the jackets are made in the UK. I took a chance on their Vincent jacket for $105 shipped (from their eBay store, which has better prices).

It arrived today. The jacket is very nice. The fabric is heavy and durable, and the construction seems solid (besides a few details—more on that later). But the fit is outrageously off.

I’m 6’-even, 160-170lbs, and I take a size 38 jacket and size 30 pants. According to the Campbell Cooper sizing chart, I should be an XS (equivalent to a size 38). And yet, even though I’m wearing a thick sweater today, the jacket is much too big.

Sizing

I feel like I’m wearing a pup tent.

Fastening the belt helps, but the belt is too long. I can’t buckle it tight enough for my waist. So the jacket is billowy and the belt dangles. The shoulders and sleeves fit alright, but the body is much too generous.
Here are the measurements for a size XS:
chest 24”
waist 22”
shoulder 20”
length 28.5”
sleeve 24”

24” for a size "XS" is pretty absurd.

Details
There isn’t a lot of information online about this jacket. So I’ll run down some of the details. The buttons are brass and quite bright. Other reviewers have complained about their placement, but it seems fine to me. There’s a double-ended zipper, corduroy collar with storm latch, and the jacket is lined with a simple black cotton twill. The left-hand breast pocket has a hidden zipper underneath the pocket flap.

A close-up of the collar and lining.

The belt loops are awkwardly large. Why are they so big? I don’t know.

Here’s the sleeve detail. Single button, with an articulated cuff.

There’s a large single inside pocket.

The buckle on the belt is fabric covered, and the one I received has some tearing already. Maybe Campbell Cooper will send me a replacement.
Also, there was a very very slight chemical smell to the jacket. Like a solvent. It's hardly noticeable, and I assume it'll fade with time.

How does it compare with a Barbour?
I have a black Barbour Bedale that I bought new in February. I sized down to a 34 to get the correct fit in the body (and I really should get the sleeves lengthened). Anyhow, I think I like the material on the Campbell Cooper better. It’s certainly heavier, and feels more waxy. That could just be that the wax has worn off the Bedale after 9 months, but I was very impressed with the Campbell Cooper’s materials.

Here’s a photo of them side by side.

And a close-up of the color. The Bedale has faded to charcoal, while the Campbell Cooper is jet black.

I know comparing to a Bedale isn’t as good as comparing to an International, so I’ll pop in the Barbour store on Newbury Street sometime soon to see a more direct comparison.

The Campbell Cooper is much cheaper than a Barbour, but you don’t get Barbour’s warranty and customer service. At the end of summer I sent in my Bedale to get a tear replaced, and Barbour did it without charge because it was within a year of my buying it.

Can I recommend it?
I don’t know. The materials used are high-quality, but the fit is so oversized that I really have no idea how the jacket would match up with real world sizes. This jacket might fit someone with a size 42 chest? Maybe even a 44? I haven’t contacted Campbell Cooper by email, but I would definitely recommend getting measurements before buying any of their jackets. I wish I had done so before ordering. I’ll probably see if my tailor can bring in the body (though I hear altering waxed cotton jackets can be dicey). But if you’re bigger than me (or want to layer a motorcycle jacket over an overcoat), this jacket could be a great deal.

I recently bought a jacket from Chequered Flag (www.chequeredflags.co.uk), they are currently selling a black Trialmaster style jacket on ebay at a very reasonable £89. I have owned one of the above Campbell Cooper jackets and I have to say this Chequred Flaf version knocks spots of it.

Here's my quick review;

I wasn't sure what to expect for this price tag - But actually the jacket is very nice. It's a heavyweight 12 Oz wax cotton with a check lining that's exactly the same pattern as my Barbour International. The fit is good - not tailored but equally not too baggy. It has all the features you'd expect from a Belstaff Trialmaster, four main pockets, a zipped inside pocket, adjustable cuffs and buckle and strap at the neck plus shoulder and elbow patches. As for it's ability to keep the rain out, well I wore it on the bike through a 40 minute rain shower and it kept me dry !

What don't I like about it ? Well not much really, the press studs are shiny brass yet the buckles are antique, so it's a shame they didn't use antique all round. Also the press studs don't feel quite as good quality as my Barbour Intl, they spin around on the fabric rather than being stamped firmly on - that said they don't feel at all like they are likely to fall off. A nice detail is it also has two mesh vent studs under each arm.

Another feature is the interchangeable flag option on the left breast pocket - again a nod to Belstaff. Basically you get a selection of flags; Union jack, Stars & Stripes, Welsh, Scottish and Irish which use velcro to attach them to the tag under the pocket. But quite why anyone would want to fly the welsh flag is beyond me u k fl ag

The shoulder and elbow patches, well again being picky, but it would be nice if these were double stitched like a Belstaff rather than just single.

I've worn the jacket solidly over the past month and I have to say I'm loving it - It just feels solid. This jacket is the cheapest in the Speedwear range but I have say it certainly doesn't feel budget. They also sell a de-luxe 'Continental in Black or Brown (£169) and that has a zip-out liner and pockets for armour - So you can get some extra insulation and protection for a bit more cash.

Here's the ebay link if anyones interested;

Thanks for the info! I messaged Chequered Flag about their jackets. They say they're made in Britain, but their sizing seems too big for me personally. Their small measures 24" across, they said. But I'm glad you found one that fits you!

The Campbell-Cooper jacket is comparable to many other sub - £100 jackets that have adopted the "Barbour" style. As a purely fashion item, all seem acceptable.

For those looking for a "Barbour style" jacket to use for serious distance motorcycling, the budget jackets seem to be lacking in robustness - the Campbell-Cooper, for example, has only single needle stitching and lacks reinforcement in critical areas meaning a shoulder or arm seam may split in a tumble. The strength of the thread used to sew the seams is an important consideration too, but is difficult to determine from any vendor descriptions.

The fasteners on the Campbell-Cooper are brass-plated steel, and experience has shown me that over time the plating may wear off, leaving the steel to rust, staining the garment and perhaps swelling as it oxidizes. The quality of the belt is important too - a "roller" buckle will limit the friction on the fabric, giving it a longer life, and fastening is easier when everything is wet. Again, brass is better than plated steel. A provision (ie pockets) for armour is an important consideration for the motorcyclist, as is a zip-in-zip-out lining, preferably with sleeves, for cooler rides.

High quality branded zippers are particularly important on a garment used on a motorcycle - you would not want the garment to part at the front in a tumble, and there is nothing worse than riding in the rain with a jacket with a zip that jams or won't close!

Sub £100 wax cotton jackets are "made to a price" and obviously cheaper fasteners, fewer stitched components and absence of removable linings and pockets for armour will keep the price down. For occasional use a "budget" jacket may suffice, but for regular wear it probably won't.

I pined for a Belstaff styled jacket here in the U.S. but was not going to pay $600-$1200 for one. I settled on the Campbell Cooper on Ebay for $80US. I am 5'10 230lbs and ordered the XXXL. I am glad I ordered large. It is roomy and heavy. Large enough to layer under. Unlined. Nice features but not all the features of a Barbour or Belstaff. A nice sweater or light Harrington will go under in frozen weather. Plenty wind and waterproof. Got the style I wanted and will take forever to wear out. I would say it is a bargain when you don't have $200-$300 laying around. Unique styling where I am at and people in the know think I paid more.
