The official thrift/discount store bragging thread

Well, I had a thrift victory on Sunday: A Norman Hilton 3/2 roll blue sport coat. My size, fits great. The best jacket find I've had in two years.

    AE McAllisters: Size 10C

Size 10C Allen Edmond McAllisters, I would call these very good, minimal wear on the heel and sole. The only problem is that the previous owner did not store these with a shoe tree, I've had them in shoe trees since I picked them up. $60 CONUS shipped. +$3 for East of Chicago. Open to...

So I've cleaning out my "thrifted before I knew what I was looking for pile" and am resigned to giving the entire pile back. There's some decent stuff, but much of it does not fit quite right or simply is not what I thought it was when I picked it up. Has anybody else did this early on? Also...

Decent haul today: -Size 18 4/5 BB 346 cream colored shirt. It's a bit big on me, but I never find BB in new condition around here (if anybody is interested, let me know) -Vintage tie in black and white with a pretty cool pattern -Books, nice books too! -As usual left some cool stuff behind...

$8: Polo University Club suit, dark grey pinstripe, virgin wool, not bad for the price. Need to get the damn thing tailored as the short ****** who had it was.... short. Luckily there seems to be plenty of material. Very nice piece, actually. $4: LL Bean, made in the USA, University striped...

The official thrift/discount store bragging thread

The GW jacked its prices up, which is pretty disappointing as 90% of their inventory is junk from Wal-Mart and Kohls, not even Target. I did find a LL Bean OCBD Trad striped shirt in my size, brand new and I feel it was a good price at $4.25. Other than that: junk. Didn't hit the SA this week...

Salvation Army: Two nice suits (at least for this area) Ralph Lauren Polo University Club, dark grey with pinstripes, nice virgin wool. I got excited. I tried it on. Fit! Then I noticed the sleeves: midget. Trousers the same. I could have bought it and had it tailored.... but I just didn't feel...

Finally struck some gold here after a dry spell. -Red wool tie: I have a few of these, but it's an addiction and they go with just about anything. -Size 9D Vintage Sears long wings in a dark, dark brown. Dusty and in fairly good shape. I would estimate 60s or 70s. I find that even the...

Bought a '80s Brooks Brothers 3/2 roll sack blue jacket. It fits absolutely, utterly perfectly. I figure it's '80s, the tag is in the all caps block lettering, is that right. Also: it's a lightweight cotten blend, washable too according to the tag on the inside of the pocket. Passe' or awesome...

What's the most versatile A2 leather jacket contract repro?

Goodwear; priced the same or cheaper than RL and infinitely better quality. Also, Aero, another excellent maker.

Goodwill was good, found about 8 ties, all vintage with great patterns. I'm a sucker for the '30s and '40s vintage ties.

Anyone else notice how badly BB shirts wear on the sleeve cuff? The ones I see are in great condition other than that, which makes them so very leavable. I haven't had any bad experience with this yet, however even if I did, I'd still buy them: I am literally 4 hours from anywhere and finding...

-Pair of Church's made brown brogues for an old high shoe store in Seattle. I'd say 40s or 50s. -BB Shirt, off white, brand new. -Banana Republic striped shirt in my size -Cowboy short sleeve shirt for streetwear. Pan Handle Slim is the brand.

    Looking for a pouch * Read *

Farm Tactics. Sold out though. Not to give anything away, but ebay has those for $10, just google Machine gun tool roll, and all you need are Alice Clips (they attach it to the belt, just google it) I did this and have something that is essentially the same, for $12 or so.

SPIN: Worst expensive item you've ever bought

I thrift most of my stuff, but my first suit, bought in 2002 before I knew anything, was $150 (a decent bunch of cash for a broke student) and was a fake Italian brand. I have worn it less that 4 times and it sits in my basement; I will never wear that ill-fitting, polyester POS ever again.

Today I saw a man wearing pleated denim

They sell this **** at Kohl's and I've always wondered who wore such things. I mean, pleated Jeans? And they're always in that really light blue soft denim that only old men seem to wear, so maybe that's the answer to my question?

Hit the Goodwill on my usual run and found a vintage pair of brown wingtips from some store in Seattle that was custom made by Church's. Most likely 1950s... I never thought I would find Church's in this berg. Also found another vintage pair of wingtips in black from the long-defunct Stetson...

Should you let your wife or girlfriend buy your clothes?

If my wife had her way I would be outfitted in dark blue shirts and black pants most of the time. I would describe her sense of male fashion as very, very conventional. She has gotten to the point just to let me dress how I see fit without comment and that's for the best. She has, on occasion...

    Life in Academia

    1) Riiiight. You do it to appease the misguided minions of the forum (or whatever article familiarized you with "trad"). 2) As a political scientist, you should already have already been in the know about the importance of keeping up appearances and playing "the game." 1. Uh... Ok? I stop by...

    Life in Academia

I'm a political science academic as well - written anything I'd have read? . Do you not think the control you have over the room has more to do with your greater experience and confidence? Not sure what it's like in the states - my experience is in the UK and now Australia - but there is...
