Looking for an entry-level law job in D.C. - Leads, Advice, Criticisms appreciated

That's great news, and congratulations. It will be far easier to move to a firm doing environmental law in DC once you have a few years of experience under your belt, especially BigLaw experience. It's always easier to get a job when you have a job. DC is one of those towns like LA or NY...

Online Courses - Coursera, Udacity, EdX, etc.

This thread reminded me of the Marginal Revolution University classes I'd read about from Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok. They are more like a textbook than a class, because they just have the videos sitting on Youtube, and they don't go at a certain time the way college classes do. I downloaded...

Looking for an entry-level law job in D.C. - Leads, Advice, Criticisms appreciated

I wouldn't close off these opportunities at the moment, they can probably make you connections, and you have only been out of school a year and a half, so it's not going to look weird if you try lots of different things. I'm not that familiar with environmental law private practice, but in...

    The Home Ownership Thread

Did just this a few months ago. For me, the actual installation was fairly easy, but the microwave is a little too deep for the cabinets, so it looks ugly. I thought I could mount it farther back than I could, but that would have required cutting backsplash tile that went up unexpectedly...

    The Home Ownership Thread

lol, I spent over a month in a house with a tankless heater last year. Every morning when I took a shower I had to wait 3+ minutes for hot water, then the heat would cut out without warning right when I had shampoo in my hair. This happened with the kitchen faucet as well.

What career do you wish you had pursued?

You could go into the FBI directly with your law degree (of course you'd still start out making $50K a year and slowly work your way back up)

Naked JD - What to do?

As a side note to cheesus, there are lots of contract manager /contract specialist jobs in the DC area with both the federal government and government contractors. They are probably getting harder to find in the current fiscal environment, but there have to still be more in DC than anywhere...

What to look for when buying a home ceiling fan for the bedroom?

I just installed 3 ceiling fans, 2 in bedrooms and 1 in a living/dining room. The living room has a vaulted, angled ceiling and it's somewhat large, so I got a 70" fan. With the longer downrod I used, the fan ended up being just about at normal height above the floor (like 7 feet). This fan...

    Job Offer Etiquette

If you're an appointee, don't you have to assume you have a good shot of being out of a job next time the administration changes? Or does it not work that way in FL state gov? also you're a political appointee, in a relatively small state government, and you're posting about this on the...

Law Schools - Where and Why?

I'm not sure, but probably B+ was pretty close to median, maybe just a little bit above median. I think you have a good point about UCI. I'm not sure if I would recommend one over the other. The close attention, high profile, and having Professor Chemerinsky calling in favors on behalf of...

Law Schools - Where and Why?

Just FYI, these numbers can actually be skewed if data points get lost, intentionally or not. For instance I graduated from UCLA law in 08 and had a terrible employment outcome for about 1 year (ie, basically no employment). UCLA never asked me what my employment status was (I never changed...

Law Schools - Where and Why?

I don't know if I'd call Newport Beach livelier, but you won't be more than about 8 miles from UCI anywhere in Newport, unless you live way out on the Newport harbor peninsula, like by the Bluth Banana Stand. If you live in San Francisco, that seems like some pretty brutal traffic to me and...

Aspiring lawyer, questions on how to start

If you want to do white collar criminal defense you need to realize that most white collar criminal defense lawyers have experience as an Assistant US Attorney with the DOJ. Try to get an internship with the DOJ, any branch would probably be better than nothing, or any DC internship that can...

Odd interview exchange, what should I do?

You misread the number in the screenshot from the case interview book, it was only 30K for 6 gas stations. Personally I think a sanity check should catch this. What kind of a city with 300K people would only have 6 gas stations (maybe in Foreign?) In any case, good luck. If you outlined a...
