    The Official-ish DC Thread

I am, as my handle suggests, an academic. I am doing admin stuff at the moment and suits-and-ties are more common among my administrative colleagues, but in general, I have little reason to dress formally other than because I like to do so (and the occasional ceremony that requires it). Since I...

The big garage off of Old Georgetown is manageable. The garage at the center of the complex near the REI is the work of the devil.

Fair enough, I guess. I suppose that having spent 20 of the 22 years that I've lived in DC living in a combination of Glover Park and close-in Bethesda while working the entire time in Georgetown has made Cathedral Heights a pretty routine destination for me (and I suspect the many people living...

Just chiming in to say that I'm amused by the idea that Cathedral Heights is somehow out in the sticks. That said, I like 2Amy's just fine. Enjoy it when I'm in the area, but like most restaurants, not as good as it used to be.

One can walk to Mashburn in ten minutes if one happens to work at the neighborhood university. Hypothetically.

eBay? I’m a total noob when it comes to finding this stuff second-hand. Vintage Burberry sounds about right.

Sorry, I deleted my post because I misunderstood which one you are looking for. I’m returning the linen version.

This. So much this. I'm surprised that they clearly think that the market isn't already saturated with heavy, oversized coats. I'd be all over a well-tailored lighter-weight trench, and it sounds like @TheSuitBurnsBetter might be, too. (Valstar makes a trench, but it looks kind of meh to me.)

Actually, I think it's widely accepted that solaro doesn't have any particular cooling properties. The origins of the fabric rest in some early twentieth century now disproven science about fabric, sunlight, and tropical diseases. So, yes to high-twist wool or linen, but Solaro is still cool, if...

I'm imagining a NMWA-exclusive trench reinvented by Valstar. I'd order one right now.

My impression is that you carried a lot of winter-weight outerwear. All of it is great, but it sure seems like much of the US doesn't have much of a winter anymore. So, to echo a sentiment above, more three-season outerwear. Things that work well for fall and spring and can work for winter on...

A few years ago, I was flying through Boston on St. Patrick's day. My gate was just down the concourse from an Aer Lingus flight headed to Dublin. That was. . .an interesting scene.

Well, this is tempting. General guidance on Valstarinos is to go up one in size, right?

Try teaching a class outdoors on the Georgetown campus when planes are landing to the south. I did it once when I just started at the university. Never again.
