    I had no idea such a thing existed - are there other sized-sock makers out there? The Kane11 designs are a bit bland for my tastes, but I'd love to find sized good quality socks in, shall we say, more fanciful patterns.

    FWIW, my knockabouts are a pair of calf walnut McAllister. For the original question (which color strands), another vote for chili in shell or calf. For versatility, they're tough to beat and, unlike many of the other colors, you can get a matching belt.

    I tend to think of wingtips and cap toes with pinking, brogueing (is that a word?), and a plain leather sole as being perceived as more "formal".
