Knowledge about leather quality isn't quite that straightforward. A bespoke shoemaker I know said to trust the tannery, and that you can only see if leather is **** after years of use anyway.

    Leather Quality and Properties

I didn't know soaking leather had such a dramatic effect. In fact, I had a Edward Green shoe whose heel stiffener was maybe coming loose or something and squeaking like crazy. Several cobblers told me I'd have to send it to EG and pay hundreds to have the whole shoe remade. Then an old...

Unfunded Liabilities: a/k/a The Cloth Thread

Has anyone had a coat made of 100% Angora? I wasn't able to ascertain what the advantages or disadvantages are versus a wool+angora blend (50/50, or 60/40). I mean the rabbit, not angora goat (mohair).

Continue with Cesare Attolini or going for Bespoke?

If you're in Paris, check out Julien Scavini too. Bespoke is 3000, MTM is 1500 iirc. Camps de Luca also purchased Stark and offers an MTM with bespoke fittings for 3000 (regular camps is 6k).

Probably. I just don't know if there's any space for old-fashioned multi-brand retailers here. Some make it work by having a physical presence in smaller cities where brand stores are absent. For instance, Upper Shoes sells Edward Green, Lobb, Santoni etc. in Lyon. These brands only have...

Maybe a select few independent retailers capstone and leave it at that. But 7-12x was a direct quote from a retailers association spokesperson here in France though and concerns many vertically integrated fashion conglomerates.

Discussions about the fashion industry thread

French bi-yearly "soldes" are only a period in which brands are authorized to sell at a loss to clear inventory. It's irrelevant now because. 1/ No one ever sells at a loss, given the retail multiplier of 7-12x 2/ American sales practices have been imported, such as black friday. You can have...

Margins are only "absurdly thin" for suppliers or contracted factories. IP owners make a killing.

Discussions about the fashion industry thread

I also dislike fast fashion for reshaping the consumers' knowledge or lack thereof. Now, it's expected of garnments to be poorly cut/patterned, to be so thin that even light-colored jeans are see-through sometimes. So much so that people don't see those issues and consider it "normal" quality...

The CM Graveyard: First Sartoria Partenopea... next J. Crew?

Louis Vuitton does that with shoes at least. They do the uppers and the soles in Romania, and then stitch the two together in Italy, and this fulfills the EU law requirement to have "made in Italy" stamped on the product. I suspect you could just stitch the shoulders on a suit and get away with...
